If you grew up listening to Mike Lange call games, you were treated. The broadcasts have never been the same without him. Now the hole is even bigger. R.I.P Mike Lange and thanks for the memories.

Very sad to hear. Iconic play by play announcer and I’ll always remember his distinct voice. Rip sir.

Just gotta leave my condolences and thoughts. I grew up in Washington, Pennsylvania and spent my first 30 years there. Mike Lange was the voice of my childhood. I don't even know if I would care about this sport if it weren't for that man. I hope he's at peace now. Thanks for the memories, Mike.

I can remember playing countless hours of video games or even table hockey, every time mimicking one of Lange's signature calls. We fell in love with the game through him.
To reduce him to just the signature goal calls is a disservice; he was as great an orator as I have ever heard. He told the story of every game. You could sense the urgency and importance of a moment in his voice. And you could sense through him what was about to happen. Countless "here comes________, look out here" moments and he was so often right. You could sense the excitement in his voice when Lemieux broke in alone. No disrespect to those who will try to fill his shoes going forward, but they just arent the same. No one ever will be.
It says alot that so many of us who were fortunate to attend countless games over the last 40 + years sprinted to our cars after games in hopes of catching his radio replays.
Rest in Peace, Mike. It's a hockey night in Heaven. Mike Lange has just left the building.

mike paid his dues during the early years of the franchise. the pens were bad, and the igloo was mostly empty. but things changed in '84. think about it, mike got to call play-by-play for some of the games greatest players. lemieux, jagr, francis, crosby, malkin, & others. he got to be firsthand witness to some amazing on-ice moments and games (esp. 91-92, 09,15-16).

as a gen x'er growing-up in the burgh, mike lange's voice echoes in my memories of watching pens games with my father. there was nothing like the opening "it's a hockey night in pittsburgh" to set the stage/ anticipation of seeing a great game. in honoring mike's contribution to the organization, he deserves a statue memorializing his legacy. he was the voice of the penguins.

I'm glad that his ability to teach the game is mentioned here. That is sometimes forgotten. I learned A LOT about the game by listening to him. He pointed out things that you wouldn't otherwise think about. He explained why players and coaches did certain things. He complimented players on the other teams when they deserved it. He brought up historical points about certain teams and players. He got you to look at the game a little differently.

Watching the 4 Nations game and they mentioned McDavid was in his 10th season with the Oilers. What the (frank)ing (frank)? How has it been that long... thought it was only 4 or 5 years. Time blindness is a bit horrifying at times.

The NHL really lucked out with Crosby/Ovechkin both being in the eastern time zone. Every time McDavid plays a good team in the eastern time zone, it should be accessible for everyone to watch. I'd bet a huge % of the US has never even heard of Connor McDavid.

Mike Lange provided a lot of light during some dark times in Penguins history. Easily one of the nicest guys I met in all of my years supporting the Penguins. Very down to earth.

McDavid isn't that guy if you ask me. I don't know why, but I get a massive pretentious douche vibe from him. Crosby and Ovi were just perfectly different individuals, completely different games from each other but both awesome in their own ways. Both battled super hard too, Crosby down low retrieving picks, Ovi running D in the corner. I don't see any of that in McDs game.

He is an absolute dynamo with the puck, no doubt. Away from it... Not so much. Hopefully he proves me wrong and nets a big one here, but I think it's crazy playing him more minutes than Sid and Mack. Game on the line and I want Sid out there over anyone.

I actually think the first US vs Canada game, and even moreso if the US wins this game will be another massive shift for the league. At a time where everyone in the US is getting sick with the NBA, these guys come out and just go to war. Those 3 fights sure as heck brought some exposure!

I can see Sid missing time after this. He’s been pretty weak this tournament.
