Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Grossmann, Meyer - bmeltzer
Good for Freddy Meyer. Cue the Flyers west jokes.
I'd rather see any Flyers playing overseas play on the same team as much as possible. It'd be great if everybody went to Timonen's team in case of an extended lockout. |

The import-player limits and the problem of having to replace large segments of the roster -- not to mention the cost of paying the insurance premiums -- for NHL players will prevent teams from signing more than a couple of NHL players.
While it remains to be seen who will end up where in the event of a lockout, I think chances are pretty good that about half the Flyers will end up either in the AHL or Europe.

I'd rather see guys play than not. Obviously excepting cases like Timonen, who would likely benefit from time off. |

I agree, Bill. I think you'll be seeing that with most of the teams, especially if the Svenska Hockeyligan opens things up. Already a few of the Russians (primarily Malkin and Kovy) have said they will go to the KHL. A few have hinted they will go to Czech. Many have hinted to the SEL, assuming they open things up... at least the guys have choices, and don't need sit things out due to political partisanship.
It will be pretty interesting to see more of the young guys playing on the Phantoms. Maybe they can even make a run at the Calder until things get sorted out. |

Bill, any reaction to Dreger reporting the league is looking to drop the salary cap by 10 million next year? Surely they are asking for more than they actually want but how can any drop in the cap be made without the league allowing contract buyouts? |

Players salaries will automatically be rolled back by the same percentage that the Cap is rolled back. |

Exactly. Even before all of this started, Bettman said that teams would not be punished for compliance with the temporary cap.

Why dont they keep the cap as it is now, and lower the cap floor. Keep the 70 mill cap for the next 5 years then revisit. |

That's something that i thought would work, but then the small markets would complain of a have/have not system. I definetly think that the floor will be at a lower percentage and slower growth going forward. |

It's been dreadfully slow here the past few days, so hopefully those who are here can answer my question:
I'm looking to get back into the game of writing again--most likely starting a blog--any suggestions what websites I might use, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciative at the moment. |

Here's a good story on cap negotiations and what they mean:
http://starsblog.dallasne...he-players-see-it-2.html/ - bradleyc4
good piece, Brad. I think it makes a strong case for the luxury tax. Never liked the cap and don't feel an ounce of pity for the weak teams. The NHL needs to move teams around. Seems like they want their cake and eat it too hopefully we don't go without another whole season of hockey to decide this. |

There's no perfect system, but I do like the flexibility of the luxury tax system.
I also like the parity that comes with the salary cap.
Not sure I'm willing to lose another year to try to change from one system to the other, though. |

I hear ya. Don't know how you feel about it but I'd like for a franchise tag. I think The NHLPA proposed that and I don't see why it should be a problem, helps teams keep their franchise guys when things get dicey while keeping the player properly compensated even tho its short term. |

Updated blog --
Flyers prospect Nick Cousins, along with Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds' teammates Andrew Fritsch and Mark Petaccio will not attend the team's training camp, which opens today. The team released a statement from general manager Kyle Dubas, stating that the three players have not been suspended by the team but will remain away for the time being to undergo personal counseling.
Cousins faces an Oct. 1 court hearing, stemming from sexual assault charges recently filed against him by Sault Ste. Marie police following an Aug. 25 incident. Fritsch and Petaccio face the same charges. |

There could be a near perfect system but IMO it would require consistent and credible financial data for all teams separately and collectively.
Also IMO a good system would require some form of revenue sharing. Without seeing data though, I can't add much more of my expertise.
