What a difficult and almost impossible choice to make in choosing between Ron Hextall and Pelle Lindbergh for the backup spot. The starter is automatic.

Exactly. It's Bryzgalov, and everyone else.

A true elite goaltender.

to be fair, some people may vote to what they remember. Bernie is an awesome goalie but would a 30 year old, really know how great Bernie was? Do you simply go on what you are told or what you have seen?
In their lifetime, they did not see Bernie play and most likely didn't even see Pelle play...

I was lucky to see both play.

Clearly Tommy Söderström and Dominic Roussel

To me this was the easiest of all polls. Bernie #1 and Hexy #2. I wouldn't understand if Bernie didn't get everyone's vote.

I had an easy time going with Hextall because of Pelle's untimely death and limited time here. its crazy to think what would have happened if Pelle was never killed. would Pelle and Hexy been a tandem? would one of them been traded? who would have ended up being the better goalie over their careers? just thinking out loud

You don't have to be alive at that time, to be aware of history. To be aware that Bernie Parent is a Hall of Fame Goalie. Who backstopped the team to two Stanley Cups. I have never seen Gordie Howe play live or on TV. But I'm aware of how great of a player he was.

I chose Hextall for the same reasons. But it was a difficult choice to make. It would have been interesting in what would have happened if that unfortunate accident hadn't occurred.

I will blog about it tomorrow. Didn't want to try to influence any votes for the second spot.

Hexy is running away with the second spot, and I'm not at all surprised. He had the longer career because of Pelle's untimely death. Hwas a Flyer more recently than Pelle, so more voters saw him play. Hexy also revolutionized his position with his puckhandling. Hextall's rookie season was one of the best ever by an NHL goalie.

With all that said, Pelle Lindbergh was the better goalie of the two, and it wasn't even all THAT close. Everyone knew Lindbergh had elite goaltender potential from the get-go, and he fulfilled it. Hexy's huge rookie year was a bit of a surprise, and he never played to that level again for a variety of reasons.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Ron Hextall fan. But Lindbergh was well on his way to being equal or better to Bernie -- he was already the best goalie in the NHL and was still improving when the accident happened.

Some people only vote for players they've actually seen play. Right or wrong thats how they vote, some of us have different criteria for this sort of thing. MVP voting, hall of fame ballots, even cal ripken wasn't a unanimous choice for the hall of fame.

Everyone gets to decide how they want to vote and what criteria they use. That's what makes it interesting. All I'm saying is that you don't have to have watched the player play to be aware of his greatness. And the #1 choice at this position for the Flyers is an easy choice to make.

oh believe me, I loved Pelle. Saw him play loads and even met him on several occassions. He was sooooo nice. always stopped to talk to people. He never had the opportunity to reach his full potential so its really hard to say what would have happened.

I loved Pelle's no nonsense style. Where as much as I loved Hexy he was out of control at times (I know that's a understatment).

Top three IMO
Bernie
Pelle
Hexy

Random question, but what happens if Budron ends up signing with the Phantoms? Who would pay the insurance and what are the logistics of a player having 2 contracts with the same Org?

Bill - maybe you should start a blog asking if it is Tuesday or Wednesday. My guess is you will get some disagreement.

At the very minimum, NFL officials couldn't agree on such a position.
