Clouts ...
With the cap ceiling dropping next year, do u think Horc stills gets bought out after this season?
P.S. I am already missing your "Lockout Blogs" ... maybe one last one for old times sake? |

The reason Redden was buried was not that he was not an NHL caliber player, rather, that Sather blew his load on the contract and needed the flexibility to sign other players/get Richards ect.
So for all you Oilers thinking Sather is a genius, he is not, and he had a hand in staining the reputation of a once-great Dman.
It's a shame. Yes, he has been paid, but at the penalty of losing 3 yrs of his NHL career. Most teams would never have done him that way, even with such a bad contract number, if they weren't at the ceiling each yr and always trying to get the next contract like NYR are.
His big mistake was signing with the jester Sather.
Hope he gets a team and gets to finish his career the right way. |

Trading a healthy Whitney for a pick would be a step back. Should be looking at trading picks to upgrade, unless it is known he will not be back next year. |

Giving the rotating A to N.Schultz is a pretty big kick to the teeth of Hemsky, Smyth, Gagner and Smid.
Not sure about that move |

Horcoff being bought-out depends on a couple factors:
- Does Eric Belanger bounce back and play well?
- Is Sam Gagner good enough to be a #2 center
- Horcoff's play has lots to do with it too. Better he plays, less chance he goes.
- Then there's the question about how to replace him if he is bought out. Oilers would need to finish mightly poorly to get an immediately replacement at the draft.
I'm hoping Horcoff and the entire Oilers team plays great. Then there would be no reason to buy him out. |

Was the Fristic trade the one you were referring to when you said the biggest since Gretzky?

Out of those four, Smid is the only one who's gonna be here three seasons from now, so I'm not concerned. |

I have no problem signing Redden at league minimum to be the #7 guy. I'd personally rather have him than Potter if Whitney gets hurt/is moved. Plus, depth on defense is never a bad thing. Might be in the minority here though. |

N.Schultz must be a hell of a 'room guy' to get it instead of Smid. |

Junior Numbers: 39, 60, 54..
NHL Numbers: 30, 22, 29, 36, 47, 34, 45, 43, 50, 36, 36, 38, 26, 14..
A minus only twice in NHL career (-5, -1)
AHL Numbers aren't great, but what do you expect when a player knows he's got no shot to make it back to NHL until his contract runs out.
I think Redden could be a top four Dman in my mind..but that's just based off the numbers..35 yrs old, still got some good seasons left..
but maybe he's got attitude issues? |

I would have rather had 2 home alternates and 2 away alternates..
Hall, ebs as a pair and Hemsky, smid as a pair. |

Schultz is well liked in the locker room. He was a player favorite in Minnie. That said, what the hell is the point of "rotating" alternate captains?
Whoopie! I get to be a an alternate alternate captain! How honored these guys must feel for getting a chance to wear the 'A' for a game or 2! But not quite revered enough to wear it permanantly!

I agree... I like that N. Schultz was given an A though. |

Freidman says there is actually quite a bit of interest in Redden once bought out. So no way he signs anywhere for minimum. probably around 2 mill. I wouldn't give him that but somone will. |

I like the change of captaincy because Hemsky and Whitney no longer deserved the "A's", however I don't fully agree with the moves. Giving Nick Schultz that A is a slap right to the face of Ladislav Smid. Schultz hasn't even been an Oiler for a year yet. Smid has been with the team since 06-07. He goes out on the ice and kills himself for this team on a nightly basis and this what he gets for it. I really don't understand it. |

I said last year that Schultz ws a great guy and when he arrived it really solidified the D.
I've said it before. I'll say it again. Edmonton does not have a problem on D or in goal. A few weeks from now I guess we'll all see. |

Sometimes locker room presence comes into play. Maybe he didn't want the role. Not everyone wants that spotlight. This could be why he didn't get an A... |

From what we can see as fans Smid is an excellent presence and everybody loves him, although I do understand there may be more to it that we can't see. What we can see, however, is that he is a guy who will most definitely lead by example and on any given night will do whatever he has to do for the team to win. It's possible he didn't want that role as well and I guess we will never know the full story. I just personally think that he should most definitely have been in line ahead of Schultz. |

Hey Rich, who do you think are some potential goalies the Oil could go after if Khabby isnt ready to go? Is there any notable UFA goalies floating around right now or would it definately have to be a trade? |
