Tim Panaccio: Does This Move Improve Flyers' Chances? - tpanaccio
To be fair, why would Holmgren disclose an injury that forces him to swing a deal and possibly hurts his position in terms of bargaining?
Gagne's a low cost roll of the dice. He's still got speed and smarts, if not the same scoring ability he had a few years ago, and let's face it, if he comes in and has success and the team is still foundering, he's an asset they can move to recoup the pick or possibly even better it.
Gagne also brings veteran presence and leadership to the table. |

I agree with those bringing up Gagne's Defensive prowess. Giroux has been our big gun known to play PK & PP. Before that Richards did it, and before that it was Gagne. I say put him on the third line with Coots & Knuble and watch you get a line that can shutdown the opposition and make the most of their chances.
The top 2 lines are pretty set and should remain so. But I think he could be a great guy to help mentor Coots. |

I just hope they stick the course with the young kids, and don't make any foolish trades for veterans like Iginla particularly in a season they obviously are not serious contenders. I mean so many people were fine with them trading Voracek this past summer in those potential Weber deals, and now the guy is blossoming into an elite player this season. I'm not opposed to trying to acquire Dustin Buff from the Jets, but I would not let Couturier get away. They wouldn't move him for Weber, which would only make this deal look even worse.
I'd hang onto G, the Schenns, Voracek, Simmonds, Couts, Hartnell, Coburn, Grossman, and Talbot. Continue to build around them and try to upgrade in the offseason. If they are out of a playoff spot try to get draft picks for players who will be UFA's (Fedetenko, Knuble, Gagne, Foster, etc if any team is interested in these depth players), and possibly Briere since he may be bought out of his final 2 seasons this summer anyway.

With Read and McGinn out, we needed another forward. Homer should be given some credit to stick with the young core, yet go out and grab a good player (how good, we'll need to wait and see). Gagne seems to be an upgrade over others on the roster. We have plenty of young guys out on the ice, so I don't see that Gagne is stealing time away from anyone. I'm hoping this trade for Gagne means no more talk of a Iginla or anyother forward.
Homer is probably shopping for a defenseman, but have not seen a clear upgrade that was worth what we'd have to give up. He may sit tight this year and wait for the UFA pool to pick from. |

The Gagne trade is an example of the kind of small changes this club needs.
Bringing in Byfuglien would mean blowing the team up. This is a young team with a ton of talent that does not need to be blown up. Homer knows this. |

I still see a possibility of Danny Briere being moved to Boston "if" the Flyers become sellers.
Who would the Flyers want from Boston? The Briere to STL for Shattenkirk rumors makes more sense. Boston isn't going to move Dougie Hamilton. |

The Flyers aren't getting Shattenkirk for Briere.
I doubt they get more than a 2nd rounder or decent prospect if they move Briere. |

On TSN Bob Clarke admitted that while Gags might not be at the top of his offensive game anymore (and took some blame for his injury handling) his defensive two-way game is something they'd like to rub off on Coots. While Talbot has been great helping Sean on the defensive side, I think Gagne might be be the right guy to bring out Coot's offensive game while playing good 2 way hockey.
I really do hope they put Knuble on that line too for old time's sake. |

Gagne is done, we surely won't make the playoffs if this is what the cure is supposed to be. Gagne, Knuble, maybe Lindros is next?? |

I think the Flyers absolutely make the playoffs. The Southeast is awful and is only going to get one team in, and I am not sold on the Habs, Leafs or Sens holding a playoff spot. |

Briere is not the Briere of old and he is not in demand. Some teams would drop a second or third for him as a rental for the playoffs but long term there would be little interest if any, and that is a fact. |

Madcap gone mad
Habs and Leafs should make it but Ottawa is hanging on despite five straight wins. In a shortened season they could still sneak in but they are the only one that I would predict not to make the playoffs this year. Just my nickels worth |

I don't know, I've seen this story with the Leafs before - overachieving early, running out of gas late. Perhaps the shortened season produces a better ending for them. I will give it to the Leafs and Habs - they play to their maximum abilities on most nights. |

I'll go out on a limb and say Gagne has more goals tonight that whoever LA takes with that pick will have his entire career. |

Yep, Gagne sure looked done tonight. One thing is clearly evident. Gagne can still play. As long as he stays healthy, he is far from done.

Tim Panaccio: Does This Move Improve Flyers' Chances? - tpanaccio
I was kinda surprised at how much the loss of Jagr affected Giroux. Giroux hasn't looked near as dominant this year. Didn't help that he also lost Hartnell for a bit either. Gagne offers a similar game to what Jagr did. Good secondary scoring, and a nice playmakers touch + good size around the net.
It already looks smart in game 1. Giroux put up a strong 2 point effort!
Great pick up by Philly |
