Next 48 hours will determine whether we are contenders or pretenders.
If we scoop up 4 points then you'd think MB would acquire a missing piece.
If we get 2-3 then I think we'll see him add some depth. If we get 0-1 then I bet mB stands pat and rides the waive.

You're contenders.

You had a decent team last year that was mired in off ice issues. The team made the necessary changes, brought in a stable GM, brought in a coach the players are listening to, and getting Markov back healthy sure as poop hasn't hurt the team either.

Add to that Prust, who is a leader by action. Galchenyuk, a young skilled guy who's being put in a role that will allow him to produce and grow at a realistic pace for a first year pro, and. Gallagher, who I (frank)ing hate but that's 99% because of jealousy because the kid has the heart of a lion.

A team doesn't accidentally luck into a 20-6-5 record without being a good team.

Problem is that it looks like Diaz and Bourque are potentially gone for the year with concussion issues. Diaz was among the points leaders for Dmen. As a group we've done well without him but he's a huge missing piece.

Bourque was performing really well as well before he went down with injuries.

We have holes, we have alot of kids in the line-up.

JuggerNOTS. I give credit to the Canadiens. However this is not a team geared for the playoffs at all. Not enough experience, toughness.

It'll be a great indication certainly, although we must consider that the Pens will still be without Malkin, Letang, and Murray tonight.

That said, this is still a very good Canadiens team.

interesting to see how the Habs handle two back to back games - particularly since its against tough teams.

I'd surely make a push for Regehr.

As far as the top 9 needs are concerns. We have to give a roster player back if we were to get someone.

Prust would play with Eller and Galchenyuk on the third line right wing.

Then you have Gionta and Ryder, two right wingers on the second line.

I think we need to go for a top 9 winger with grit. Clowe and Clarkson come first in my mind but it would cost a lot. If we can have sign them after this year, it would worth de risk tough.

One way or another, Gionta needs to be in the package for one of those players.

The best fit might be Clarkson and Bernier for Gionta, Ellis and Nash 2nd.

Well said. I agree about it not being worth the risk of losing future depth at the expense of now. The penguins will be in trouble when they have to renegotiate contracts for Letang and Malkin. They will have cap issues for sure. Plus they have a far better team than Montreal at just about every position save goalie.

I'm not worried about Boston, Habs can beat them in a 7 game series.

We can beat anybody in a 7 games series. The thing is we can't beat 4 teams in 4 7 games series in a row.

So it was Boston 1 and the Pens 2, then the Pens won 2 in 5 days. Now it's Habs. The adds cost virtually nothing...they are a former team captain and the net front presence they lacked. So meshing shouldn't be an issue. As far as Letang and Malkin go, do you really think Shero isn't going to sign them? Pens have nearly 20 mil in cap space right now and at least 4 big contracts coming off at seasons end.

Habs are a good team. MT is a good coach but they don't match up EVEN in the net.

nice blog steve!

i guess it would make sense for MB to wait till at least after these 2 games to assess what it is exactly that this current roster lacks

Let the kids play and get some experience. Unless MB trades on the cheap for some big bodies theres no point in overpaying for assets while the team is still young. With all the picks next draft and the habs great scouting, this team could potentially set itself up to have the deepest pipeline of prospects in the league while still having a young roster.

The best spot for the Habs is the second spot. but at the end, we will have to face Pitts, Boston or Ottawa. We need a little more grit.

I actually like Montreal in a series against Ottawa or Boston, I think Montreal could beat either team.

I don't think anyone in the east can touch the Penguins though, especially since they've added a couple big pieces they needed.

I think you just need to fix minor problems with your team at the deadline.

Claiming Halpern was a good move since he's a good vet and he'll improve the PK and the performance in the faceoff circle.

Tinordi has been under evaluation has the big body to protect the goaltender. If they decide that he can do the job, they won't need to trade for D.

The other issue might be scoring depth and size up front. Probably the only deal that Bergevin will do. Clowe, Iginla or Clarkson are all possibilities. However, I would try to bring Jagr. He's a good friend of Plekanec and they had great chemistry in Kladno during the lockout. He's a legendary offensive player with size that is still able to produce points. Finally, he would cost much less than Iginla or Clowe in my opinion.

Agree!
But I heard the Stars are talking with Jagr to re-sign him for another year. Would like to see him play with Pleck. Bergevin will probably have a better idea what he will do Wednesday night after the game in Boston.
