I'm sure it won't be too pricey, and even if it were the Flames are loaded with cap space. |

how does it work for Brodie if there isn't salary arbitration as an RFA?
what happens if they can't work things out?
always thought RFA's had a right to arb |

Is Feaster doing anything to bring in goal scorers? He's got $17MM in cap space, assuming Kipper retires. |

I'm not sure exactly how it works and what the difference between Brodie and Backlund's cases are. Maybe because Backlund's played more games?
I haven't read through the new arbitration rules in the CBA yet. |

They don't really have any stars, but they have a ton of wingers in Cammalleri, Glencross, Hudler, Stempniak, Jones, Galiardi, etc. I think his biggest priority is to find an upgrade at center. |

I'm assuming Backlund has an extra year of NHL experience under his belt (essentially 3) whereas Brodie only has 1 full and parts of a 2nd.
Backs should get somewhere around a 2 yr 6mm deal, a prove-it type of contract
Brodie, they would be wise to try to do a longer term and hope to keep the future number down. Like a 4 yr 15mm. He's going to be their future 2D or maybe even 1D. |

So you think 2 centres will replace the loss of tanguay, iginla, and bouwmeester? |

It doesn't matter. The picks eventually will. Calgary is better off than the Nucks right now, at least we know our goalie will report.

JBO will be the toughest minutes to replace , Kipper, Iggy & Tanguay open up lots of minutes for the young guys to make their mark. I guess that's the whole point of a rebuild, of all fans I would think Oiler fans would understand. Not really concerned about lacing what we lost, more concerned how some of our more skilled young players handle the increased minutes and responsibility. |

One thing that sucks for oilers and flames fans is that their prospects are mediocre. The oilers have had to rush so many prospects to fill a roster and you guys have traded so many draft picks that Your pool is shallow as well.
Mac t figured it out at this draft and tried to address it same with faster with his 3 1sts, but it's part of the reason I beileve edmontons rebuild has been so long and calgary's will be similar |

I disagree. 2-3 yrs and Calgary will be back in the playoff hunt. The Oil's took/is taking longer because of the poor vets they surrounded the kids with.
In other news, um, please no!

Truth there! If we had vets like giordano iggy and stempniak to actually provide positive attitude along with skill we would have had a much better rebuild, that being said as crappy as it is being 30,30,29 we got some ridiculous talent in hall nuge and yak |

I just hope nuge won't be damaged because he was brought up before he was physically strong enough. |

I'd like Brodie to be at least 5yrs
Backs on a 3yr @ 2.5
Brodie 5yrs @3.25

That's a fair criticism, as he had a rough go of it last year. Though I think he will be fine. Still think he has a higher ceiling than Hall IF he puts it together.
The Oil SHOULD be on the rise this yr. Then again, until the kids prove they can be the leaders, it's a crapshoot.
I don't think the Flames have a barren prospect pool anymore. They should be ranked in the teens this yr (maybe 16th?) and are only going to get better. And the Center, IMO, is finally shored up. Backs, Monahan, and (eventually) Jankowski. I have high hopes the Calgary scouts knew what they were doing with him, and with any luck, they can call him up in 3 yrs after he is done with college.
The Oil didn't have this luxury to wait, which is why I think the rebuild will be quicker for Calgary. The right kids are up now, Feaster made the right (small) acquisitions to allow those not ready to develop properly in the AHL/College, and Calgary will be that much better. I hope Feaster sticks around, he's done a helluva job. |

I think that's more reasonable than 4 years for 15mill
that's quite a leap from his 700k he made... he is progressing well, but not sure that justifies 4 years at 3.75
knowing his progress, he's better off signing something short and then signing his big contract in 2-3 years |

The 500k a yr overpayment is justified by his likelihood of signing it vs 5 yrs. Remember Phaneuf got his big contract, much bigger, after 2 solid seasons. Signing Brodie to this after 1 is the smarter play. Don't see him taking 5 yrs at 3.25, but 4 at 3.75 is something they may consider. |

I agree getting him locked in long, I'd be fine if it was 5 years at 3.75
depends what kind of player he's really going to become in the future... for a 5 year contract, if we're overpaying now, you want to have some savings in the last couple years in the deal.
if he's worth 2 mill at present and in 5 years maybe a 5 mill player, then 3.5 sounds about right
we're all just guessing as couch GMs lol |

I see him as a Doughty-type. Puck moving dman, and with any luck, some grit to come.
If we can get him at 4 yrs 3.75 per I'd be stoked.
And everyone laughed at me last offseason for saying he'd get 5mm.
