I'd be interested in the number of primary assists per game. - bradleyc4

Bill,
On NHL.com they list Claude Giroux having 200 assist in 333 games? You have him at 137 assists in 263 games? |

Having secondary assists = primary assists in judging a player's "playmaking" ability is foolish imo.
But the NHL says they're equal, so let's just follow protocol and we'll all be wiser. |

Not necessarily. I mean, lets say I make a sweet pass to my teammate who then takes a shot which is saved but have my other teammate knock in the rebound. I get the secondary assist but I still argue that my assist is one of a playmaker |

Not saying that secondary assists are useless, just that they shouldn't be valued as much as primary ones. |

What's the guarantee that the primary assist was the better display of "playmaking" ability? |

The single greatest one-shift display of individual skill I have ever seen in Flyers history was Forsberg dangling around five Buffalo Sabres as he circled all the way around the offensive zone and then feathering a beautiful pass to a wide-open Eric Desjardins in the 2006 playoffs. - bill

What about the guy who made the great outlet pass that started the scoring chance, but doesn't get credited with an assist?
There are a lot of what-if's, and my idea of separating out primary and secondary assists is likely never to see the light of day. It's just my opinion. |

There is none. More often than not the primary assist is the better display of playmaking ability.... If you're going to go through the trouble of anlyzing the data this deeply the best way to do it would still count assists in general. Don't separate the primary vs secondary. Just weigh them differently. Each primary = 1 playmaking point while each secondary = 0.6 playmaking points or something like this. I'm far too lazy to go through with this though |

I think overall, guys who are leading the league in assists are generally considered top playmakers, but I think we can also weed out some anomalies and frauds by looking at the numbers a little more deeply. |

There are instances where even the primary assist wasn't critical to the goal being scored, and there are instances where the secondary (or even third, fourth) assist was the play that really broke down the defense.
I'm not sure there is really is a problem with the way points are awarded by the league... I'd much rather focus my ire on the farce that is PP%/PK%, +/- and listing W's as a primary goaltending stat. |

The best stat is obviously Hits, followed by giveaways and takeaways. |
