impressing data. love to see brodeurs stats years before. Schneider is tough since he's unproven and going into a different system. good research |

Thanks a lot. I did some digging a couple years back and Schneider's numbers are as good or better then. He's the real deal, I believe. |

Very interesting stuff. I have a suggestion for a future blog but I'm not sure how possible it is to do. Wonder if you could find stats on our shooting tendencies like where the majority of the shots we generated came from last season. Probably impossible to find stats like that though.
Now on Schneider I'm very optimistic we found the successor and a quality one in Schneider. Hope Marty can teach him a lot this year and be pushed by Schneider as well. Hopefully its mutually beneficial. I wonder if Marty has any desire to stick around and become a back up after this year. |

you might be right, fair price to pay for a starter too |

Good stuff. The more I read about Schneider the more I think he will be excellent goalie for the Devils.
The goaltending should be a strength this season and a big improvement over last season. |

I like the comment about how Vancouver allowed more defensive shots than NJ. Van would allow the first shot from the perimeter knowing it was a low percentage scoring chance. Now, how will Lundquist fair under Vignault knowing that type of system will likely be used in New York this season. How will Schnieds live with more 'in your face' hockey?
And NJ getting Schneider for 9th overall is a steal. He is a phenomenal goalie. For all the noise eastern media stirred up about the goalie drama in Van, did anyone notice that these are two top flight goalies who excel well beyond their peers? |

I know there was lots of talk about Schneider wanting to be a clear number one, and rightfully so, but another year as in a 1a/1b situation with Brodeur as a mentor could also prove to be very beneficial to his career.
Hope this works out for Schneider and the Devils (and Vancouver and Horvat) |

Still can't believe Shinkaruk fell all the way down to your original pick, I wanted the Devils to take him at 9! I think you guys got the steal of the 1st round with that pick. Save maybe for Nichuskin depending on how that all unfolds. |

This article goes a long way toward eliminating the belief held by some that the Devils' problem was giving up goals due to a large number of high % scoring chances. There was only a very slight difference in % between the % of D shots Schneider faced as compared to Brodeur, thus suggesting that Brodeur does not see the high quality chances that some have presupposed. Having seen Vancouver play like 50 times over the last three years, I feel strongly that the Devils yielded fewer prime scoring chances than Vancouver has over that period.
And as we saw, Brodeur's save % was very ordinary regardless of who was shooting the puck. The Devils are a better defensive team than Vancouver by a wide margin. Schneider is a better goalie than Brodeur (at his advanced age) by a wide margin. It's simple math. Math that indicates we have potential to be a far better team this year if Schneider plays the 45-50 games that he should. |

With Kovy, I felt Brodeur still might get more starts than Schneider or close to 50-50. But we can't take any chances without Kovy. I agree that Schneider needs to be our starter and get 50-55 games. |

If I can somehow find the data, I'll put it together. Got nothing better to do today |

This is more annoying then I originally thought it would be. Making somewhat arbitrary divisions for shot locations is kinda tricky.
Edit: This may take longer than previously thought, mostly due to procrastination |

Yeah, I was higher on Shinkaruk than Horvat originally, and am pumped we got both.
I was actually hoping Gillis would choose Nichushkin or Shinkaruk at 9, but with the risk involved with picking Russians, I can understand why he went with the safer pick.
I wasn't too familiar with Horvat, and wasn't impressed with his offensive totals, but after reading some comments from London Knights' fans, it sounds like his offense took off when he was bumped to the second line.
