The Flyers have always been obnoxious, smug, cocky, heartless, egotistical & arrogant. But God love them, wouldn't want them any other way. They make the NHL a more interesting ;league. The playoffs are actually not the same without the Flyers. I hope they do make it, just not at the exspense of the Leafs. That would a wild 1st round matchup since they have never liked each other too much. |

Thanks Ek for the nice article. It provides some insight into the way the Flyers work, and some interesting folks that help grease the wheels. I haven't given up on them yet, but they are quite frustrating to watch sometimes. My wife even gives me heck when they fall behind, "Not again," she says...hahaha. I always tell her to go back to watching Lifetime.
What do you think about this line up?
Rinaldo G-Money V-check
Hartz Vinny Simmonds
Schenn Talbot Read
Newbury Coots Hall
Timo Coby
Streit Schenn
Grossman Mezzy
Reasons:
Rinaldo played well when he was on the first line last time. He provides some grit, plus some motivation for the other two.
Newbury in my opinion is much more mobile than Rosehill, plus you don't have the dumb penalties. In addition, he brings some grit.
Coots is not doing so well, and seemed to fit better on the 4th line.
I bet Read, and Talbot could develop some chemistry.
Timo and Coby seemed to work well at one point. Stick with them a little bit in order for them to gain back that chemistry that they once had.
All D-lines have one stay at home guy, and one puck mover. If you stick two stay at home guys together, they will just be stuck in the D-end all the time.
Thanks, and keep up the good work Ek. |

And that is EXACTLY right. Ed Snider is all about winning. He is an 80 year old self made man with plenty of wealth and no need for your approval. If you aren’t from the Philly area or a Flyers fan you might be reading that last sentence as obnoxious or the opposite of “The Customer is Always Right”...but it isn’t.
Ed has earned that statement because there has never been a single year he didn’t live and die with every Flyers win or loss and Flyers fans know it. There has never been a single move he didn’t let happen or a single excuse he let be made. And while you can debate those moves all you want, and many of course will, you can’t debate the intent.
A rosy account of reality. Winning culture? Sure. Knee-jerk reactions? You bet. Short-sighted moves? You bet. Running a team like it's a PC game? You bet. Snider might be a great owner but in the grand scheme of things he and the way the Flyers are run are a key reason why the Cup hasn't been there for so long. It's not about luck. The Flyers in their maniacal approach to win-now at all costs often end up shooting themselves in the foot, resulting in a team that is nearly always good, very good even, but distinctly if slightly worse than the true classes of the league. Hextall could be the guy, he understands, but the Flyers need to move away from acting like an impatient 5 year old kid that wants his toy now and at all costs or it won't matter, and that comes from above the GM. |

I like the switch up Berube made on D putting Mez with Streit and Coburn back with Grossmann (which really worked before). I disagree with with your take on Coots. I thought his line of Talbot/Coots/Read was on the better lines last night. Also I thought Schenn & Vinnie have shown great chemistry and should be kept together to let them develop it. I think our biggest issues is our top line and top Pairing. Giroux & Hartnell both looked off last night, and kimmo looked slow.
Overall, we had better puck support and looked like the coaching change woke up some guys. But without Mason Standing on his head and some help from the Thomas's struggles and getting injured, last night doesn't happen. These next 2 days are important. |

Eklund: Why the Flyers Don't Care What You Think About Them Changing Coaches - Eklund
"So enter Craig Berube. Not the safe move. Not the obvious move. The tough move."
I couldn't disagree more, firing the coach and replacing him with an assistant is the easiest move they could have made. And from what you say about why Laviolette was fired, the better move would have been firing him at the end of last season instead of waiting until now.
And BTW having an owner who lives and does with every shot on net is not always the best situation, they tend to get involved too much in personnel decisions. I'm sure Snider is a fantastic owner, but sometimes owners like that want to steer the ship more than they should be. |

Hey Eklund,
Who on the flyers could be moved? I think your article alluded to that near the end. Just curious which players are on the hot seat. |

We'd still be waiting if Dean Lombardi didn't stick to his guns and Leiweke continued to meddle. |

I thought the firing may be coming but i dont understand the firing now. why not last season? why go thru all of camp and then fire him after 3 games? wouldnt it have been a more cohesive unit if they had the coach from camp? what about Lindy? was he ever a consideration? What about Hextall for GM? Hextall did help assemble that Kings team under Lombardi. Let Hextall pick his guy. i think Holmgren is on a short leash now. |

thanks man and I agree with much of what you are writing. Rinaldo could actually develop beyond we all thought.
