Another great piece Stewie, and I remember watching those goes in Boston live on TV in your first game with the
Nordiques, as well as seeing in person your all-at-once face off with
John Paddock, Jack McIlhargy, and
Behn Wilson in Philadelphia on March 27, 1980, and of course your various tussles while you played with both the
Binghamton Dusters in the NAHL and AHL (1975-79) and the AHL
Philadelphia Firebirds (1978-79). (I also still have one of your old Firebird sticks.)
The NAHL Firebirds and Dusters in a typical bench clearer
at the Civic Center in Philadelphia in 1975-76.
Jack Carlson (who you went with in Hartford) had not only inspired one of the Hanson Brothers in
SLAP SHOT but had actually originally been cast to play one of them along side his real life brothers
Steve and
Jeff Carlson. Jack had to pull out of the project, however, when he was called up from the
NAHL Johnstown Jets to the
WHA Minnesota Fighting Saints shortly before filming began in Johnstown in the spring of 1975 and was replaced by
Dave "Killer" Hanson who was later one of those enforcers with the
WHA Birmingham Bulls that you played against while with the Stingers. (Stewie also played against all three together in the NAHL when his Dusters faced the Jets.) By the way the apartment that was used as Charlestown Chief's player/coach
Reggie Dunlop's (played by
Paul Newman) was the real apartment in Johnstown that had been shared by Dave Hanson,
Paul Holmgren, now
GM of the
Philadelphia Flyers, and current
Anaheim Ducks head coach
Bruce Boudreau.
