Jan Levine: Staal Skates Again on Thursday, Joining Rangers on Road Trip
Positive sign... - airjan23
This is awesome news. I'm a huge Staal fan. Before his first concussion he was developing into one of the better shutdown guys in the game, that would play on any teams top pairing. He was the one playing 25+ per game against the other teams top line and consistently shutting them down. Not to mention the awesome physical rivalry he had with ovechkin. That first concussion then the puck to the eye really hurt his development. Hopefully he can put this behind him now and get back on track. |

I hope so, but history shows us upon getting multiple concussions like Staal has, its that much easier to sustain another. Very concerned about his long term status. |

He's had 3 major injuries all to the head and face. You're right you have to be concerned about his long term health, as well as his NHL career. |

The eye injury really was just terrible luck. That play could happen another 100 times and how times does that puck break Staal's face and destroy his eye? |

Of course, but the point is it is more trauma to the head. |

Obviously. Feel bad for the guy. Hopefully he's out of the woods, but that's not likely. |

I don't know what I would do if I was a professional athlete, especially in a physical sport like hockey or football where I knew the next hit I got (or even threw myself) could be my last. Has to be very frustrating. The last one with Boucher was a clean hit, didn't seem to hard, but again, the suseptibility to getting these are so much higher once you start getting multiple concussions. |

And its not like its your knee or shoulder or something that as long as u aren't overly physical when your career ends u will be fine. Its your head, u may never fell good again. Pretty scary |

We've come a long long way with concussions the last few years. Hopefully with the doctors better understanding of them we will find a way to prevent them or at the least diminish the frequency. |

No doubt, just with 2 of my favorite teams, the Rangers & Jets in football I've seen so many of my heroes go long after they're playing career with substantial difficulty due to concussions. Richter, Jeff Beukeboom, more recently Michael Sauer, Nash & Staal.
Back before more was known Wayne Chrebet & Al Toon of the Jets used to get concussions, literally knocked unconscious on the field one week, come back & play the next & get hurt worse. Chrebet talked about still to this day having no memory of some games or TD catches he had. And still having migraines & light sensitivity. |

I wonder if hes given thought to trying out the helmet Messier designed/is designing that helps to prevent concussions.
Although, I dont know what that helmet will do to protect him if he gets side swiped with a shoulder or elbow. |

Isn't the one Lindros designed the best one on the market? |

I wonder what we would have to add to Staal to get Skinner from Carolina. |

Stepan. I think Skinner is considerably better to begin with. And he's younger and signed long term |

I get what you're saying that Skinner one day, might be a legit NHL scorer. But right now Skinner is a .72 career ppg player. Stepan is a .65 career ppg player. How is Stepan and Staal(When healthy) fair for just Jeff Skinner. Staal, again, when healthy, would be no worse than the Canes #3 defenseman. |

almost impossible to gauge
it all depends on the GMs perceived value and confidence in staal moving forward in the future with his health issues
could just be staal and a 1st
but i could also see staal amd kreider needing to get it done
again, the other GM is taking on all the risk here, and that has a lot of weight in negotiations |

No matter what helmet gets made there will always be concussions. There is no way to stop the brain from rattling inside your head. With players being faster and bigger than they were you're going to see more concussions in all contact sports. To truly reduce concussions you're going to have to slow the game down. (In football make the cleats a little heavier) etc. I'm not sure the answer in hockey. |
