Not sure why you are writing on HB?

Have you explored publishing a book?

Nah.... I have an almost endless cache of stories. Name a city, player, coach, team, etc and there are stories. One of the benefits of being around the game this long!

Stewy, which of the referees in today's game do you think have the same type of outlook towards the players and game, in general, that you had/have? And why is it that rookie referee's are so bad for so long?

Great blog again as usual Stewy. Gretz was always a classy guy and a wonderful story about the stick. When my sister lived in Los Angeles, for twenty years (1974 to 94) I always visited there over Christmas and New Year's when the Flyers would be away for a couple of weeks while the ice show took over the Spectrum. Her next door neighbor was Jim Easton who made a special polished aluminum model for Wayne which were not sold to the public. In 1991 Jim gave me one when I visited the Easton plant in Van Nuys to interview and write a story about the engineer who had developed process of manufacturing for the shafts. Wayne was later gracious enough to sign the blade for me and it remains one of my prized possessions. (Fortunately this was long before the days of the TSA so United Airlines allowed me to carry the precious wand in the cabin of the DC-8 I flew back to Philadelphia in. I doubt this would happen today!)

Here's a quick one: One time in 1996, I was working an Islanders-Sabres game on Long Island. Late in the first period, Garry Galley elbowed Zigmund Palffy behind the play. I missed it. As I came out for the second period, Mike Milbury was already out on the Islanders bench, screaming at me. He waved a VHS tape at me, screaming and demanding I watch it. It was video of the elbow.

Perhaps Milbury thought I traveled around with a VCR at all times and brought it along to the ice with me. Perhaps we could play it on the jumbotron and ask the crowd to decide. Maybe we could just replay the tape of the entire first period and edit the parts he didn't like. Maybe it wasn't game footage and Mad Mike wanted to watch it's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with me, and was yelling because he was angry I hadn't made popcorn.

Actually, I have no idea what Milbury was thinking.
