Ott would be cheaper to obtain. Moulson just seems like Neal and Kunitz 2.0.

I personally think his value on the open trade market is closer to Moulson than you would think. |

Matt M would be a 30 - 40 goal score on a line with Sid. Do the pens have any good prospects they could send along with a 1st rounder? |

Ryan Wilson: Matt Moulson or Steve Ott
If the Penguins made a deal with the Sabres who should it be for, Matt Moulson or Steve Ott? - Ryan_Wilson
Are you talking as a rental, or as a trade and sign?
If it's a rental, I'd go after Ott. He'd cost fewer assets, and slides right into that 3rd line winger role just fine.
Moulson will cost more assets. Also, you run the risk of now changing the chemistry of your top 6 (which has been upset already this season due to injuries).
However, if you plan on resigning them past this season, then you can have Moulson slotted into your top 6 for next year and years (hopefully) to come. So, if it's just a deadline acquisition for 1 run, then Ott. If it's a player to build with, Moulson. |

Agreed. He may not win you regular season games or single playoff games, but he helps you win playoff rounds. That said, I still think Moulson is the bigger return value. |

I just have Ott pegged at a 1st rounder or a good prospect and a 2nd. Moulson seems like he is a 1st rounder plus a prospect.
But if you get in a bidding war with Boston or Chicago for Ott, who knows how much he would go for. |

Going with Steve Ott.... Is named by many players as one of the toughest players to be matched up against. |

He seems to me to be very much like Ian Laperriere (not Maxime Lapierre). The guy made life miserable to play against, and would (and did) give everything he had to help a team win. I still believe that, were he healthy, the Flyers at least push Chicago to a Game 7 in 2010 if they don't win it. He just wasn't right after taking that shot to the face. |

I would love to have Moulson. I have been saying the Pens should go after him since he was traded to Buffalo. But one of my biggest concerns about the Pens lately is that they seem too easy to play against. They don't have any sandpaper in their lineup with the exception of Glass and Bortuzzo (who won't be seeing any ice time the remainder of the year, assuming everyone stays healthy). So Ott would definitely improve that aspect of the game. If we are going to be giving up our 1st, maybe Shero can swing it into a bigger deal and get both of them. Send them Letang. |

Its never a bad thing to have too many offensive weapons, just thought having more of a foot soldier like Ott would really help out deep into the playoffs |

Both for Maetta, Pouliott and 2nd.
In all honesty I'm not sure Pitts pays the super overpayment required for rentals after last season. I could see the ducks getting in on Ott.

Our 1st and Pouliot would be too much for a UFA. Maybe if Moulson was signed for a few more years. I know our 1st isn't that great since it will be a late 1st rounder, but it is still a 1st round pick. Especially for a team that is going to be picking early, to have an early 1st, and then a late 1st and early 2nd, gives them a lot of options. |

After watching Ott play in Buffalo the last few season i would agree with this.
He brings the intangibles that most players dont. He may not score 30 goals a season but he'll get between 10 and 20, he's great at faceoffs, he as that ability to provide a spark to his team when they really need one and he's a great instigator though i wouldn't say dirty. He knows exactly where the line is and has the ability to pull opposing players over it resulting in power play situations for his team.
I think he should definately garner a 1st or a top prospect to start. The problem though with taking a 1st from Pitts. is it will likely be buried towars the bottom of the round. In my mind something involving a prospect would be better for Buffalo.....don't know much about your prospects, anyone interesting Penguins' fans? |

that first round pick is significant for the pens this year since they do not have a second rounder of their own to work with. |

I still don't know exactly where Moulson fits... He is more of a sniper in the mold of Neal. Crosby seems to prefer quicker, high motor guys (although he did work well with Guerin). Adding a consistent 30 goal scorer is great, but as we saw with Iginla, it needs to be a good fit.
One thing that Ott can add to this room that has been missing, is personality... He can lighten the room a little and since guys like Guerin and Talbot left, that seems to be something that is missing.
Personality is a double edged sword, as sometimes that can disrupt a room, but Ott has been teammates of Neal, Niskanen, Jokinen and Bill Guerin... so Shero can easily get an idea of how he will fit in the Pens room. |

True.. however, that is were the summer comes into play... You'd think that the Pens could probably recoup a 2nd rounder for Niskanen's or Orpik's rights if they aren't re-siging, right? If it's a mid 2nd rounder, that isn't a whole lot different than the low 1st they'd be giving up.
Buffalo also has three 2nd round picks... maybe you can make something contingent of Ott (or Moulson) resigning... like Buffalo gives us their worst 2nd (or their 3rd which will be high) if whomever we get doesn't resign?

Why would we acquire Moulson if he is slotting in on Geno's line? Still leaves a huge hole on Sid's wing. I'm a huge Bennett guy but he hasn't really proved anything. This late in the season if we are bringing in that top 6 winger it sure as poop better be for Sid. |
