Not a big fan of trade deadline day. Way too much hype and as you stated, most times these things don't work out. I agree with you about the mix of the players in the room and some guys just don't have the time to fit in. Some never do. Be careful what you wish for. |

As a Flyers fan I've always hated the trade deadline day. It's always a time of "out with the new and in with the old" for the Flyers, and it never works. Looking back on the deadline moves, I'd bet that if none of them occurred, they young players the Flyers dealt would've helped win a Cup here in Philly.
I'd imagine the same can be said for many other teams who are attracted by players for what they've done in the past over what they can still contribute today. |

The last time the "big fish" helped a team win a Cup as a TDL move was Recchi in 2006. Bill Guerin was the consolation prize to Olli Jokinen in 2008 (helped them next year). That's about it. |

1991: Ulf Samuelsson and Ron Francis get traded to Pittsburgh for John Cullen, Jeff Parker and Zarley Zalapski. The Penguins went on to win back-to-back cups because of it.
That's perhaps the most extreme example, but there've been a lot of good deadline deals that had immediate or future payoffs. Larry Murphy was a deadline trade that led the Red Wings to back to back cups. Chris Chelios was a deadline trade that ultimately helped the Red Wings win a couple of cups. Mogilny was a last minute trade when the Devil's won the cup back in 2000. Niewendyk and Langenbrunner were last minute trade to the Devil's a couple seasons later, and they played crucial roles in 2003's winning team.
I get that the majority of deals don't pan out. After all, two teams are involved in every trade, and only one team wins the Stanley Cup each year. So most of the trades don't pan out, but there have been plenty of success stories too. |

You forgot about the 1993 94 NY Ranger trades. That worked out pretty good as well! |

Avs and Bourque
At the 2000 NHL Trade Deadline, the Boston Bruins traded their best defenceman — and one of their best players in franchise history — Raymond Bourque and Dave Andreychuk to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Brian Rolston, Samuel Pahlsson, Martin Grenier and a 2000 first-round draft pick.
For Bourque, this trade was everything for him. At the end of the 2000-01 season he got to retire with a Stanley Cup ring. That season, Bourque had 59 points (seven goals, 52 assists) in the regular season and added 10 more in the postseason in
Larry Murphy traded from Toronto Maple Leafs to Detroit Red Wings for future considerations.
The veteran defenseman was an underwhelming performer and a lightning rod for criticism during his time with the Leafs, so they shipped him to Detroit and agreed to pay part of his salary. That spring, he led the playoffs with a plus-16, did the same as a plus-12 the following postseason and drowned out any critics back in Toronto with two (more) Stanley Cup rings plugged in his ears.
Various google searches come up with some actual good trades, nothing recent has really panned out, Mogilny with the Devils

That's the last one that worked out. So it's been, what, 8 years now without a "big" TDL trade working out that year. |
