Hey, it's his site. It should come as no surprise that he'll do as he pleases.
Simmonds is a really great asset for Philly. The guy works hard all of the time, and he can do a bit of everything. It would be one thing if Ek was making a ludicrous comment like saying "Give Simmonds the minutes Sid gets and he'd be better!" no. We all know that wouldn't be the case. However, Simmonds has developed into a nice player that would fit well on just about every team. I think if a franchise could poach one guy off of the Flyers, he'd be the second name mentioned after Giroux. With good reason!
Flyers fans won't stop crowing about him, but other than that he's relatively under the radar. He deserves a little 'attaboy'. |

Wayne Simmonds > Mike Richards - NJD Fan
Richards & Carter: 85 Points
Simmonds, Voracek, Couts, BSchenn & Grossmann: 194
Simmonds and Voracek each alone are outscoring Richards and Carter. On top of that BSchenn is matching Richards in points at 40 and Couturier is shutting down all stars. Imagine how these trades would be viewed if Quick didnt throw the Kings on his back for a Cup... |

Hey Look
Ek doesn't realize when a guy doesn't play the PK, or shutdown another team late in a game to protect a lead, it somehow translates into a guy being a stud offensive player, and the guy happens to play for the Flyers
definitely article worthy comparisons in here.... |

I don't think its quite that easy of a comparison. Carter made the Olympic team over Giroux for a reason. He is one of the elite wingers in the NHL with near 60% face-offs. I love Simmonds but it was a good trade for the Kings. While Quick did his part Richards was a beast in the series against VAN and against STL.
Richards is having a terrible season, 10 goals total so far this year. I still believe in him come playoff time. The only team in the WC with 1-2 punch at center that can compete with Kopitar and Richards is San Jose.
Nice article though. Sure we will see Simmonds in Quicks crease all night tomorrow. |

i'm pretty sure the kings would never take simmonds, b.schenn, couts and voracek back for richards and carter
i guess the flyers would need to sweeten the pot with giroux |

Always idiots on here that have to complain about something. Can't just read (or, shocker, choose not to read) the columns and be done with it. What does playing the PK and being a shutdown player have to do with being a stud offensively? Simmonds is a solid player, and clearly takes advantage of his ice time to contribute offensively. He's no slouch as a 2-way forward either. Oh, and he can throw down.
But of course, gotta complain about something, right? Same thing goes for the Flyersbuzz comments. It's no secret Ek is a Flyers fan, and he lives in the Philly area. It's his site, he can write about whatever nonsense he wants. Make your own site and you can too.
End rant. |

All the teams benefited from the deals with Columbus making out the worst right now.
It looks like right now the Flyers are winning the trade.
The Kings got a cup.
None of that changes the fact that Simmonds is one of the top power forwards in the league, that he is having a really good year and that any team in the league would gladly accept him in their lineup. |

Yes, Simmonds will never be a great offensive player until he gets a regular shift on the PK. You nailed this one |

But he shouldn't use ridiculous statistics that don't mean anything, and phony math that doesn't calculate what he says in does.
(1) Can't use full year points numbers with per game ATOI and come up with any kind of meaningful number.
(2) But even if he were ok on (1), his math is absurd: Point / ATOI would NOT give you average minutes per point; it would give you average points per minute.
Blows his whole argument by not understanding the math behind it.

The Kings got a cup, but it just MIGHT have had something to do with guys they already had in Quick, Kopitar, etc. instead of all Richards.
Yeah, as pointed out above, Columbus was the team that sent away Carter. Not Philly. They always seemed to get lost in the shuffle.
I'm still a fan of both Carter and Richie, but I wouldn't reverse either deal at this point. Pass. |
