Think the pp was more to do with partners rather than who is who, I don't have a problem with that in the first few games as you could see they wanted greene and severson playing together due to greenes calm ability

What do you mean by that ? You ice your best players in any situation like a pk or a pp Pairs has nothing to do with it imo as Zidlicky was out there on the pp with Severson for at least one instance. Gelinas is out most effective pp weapon he needs to be given the best chances of just about anyone when we are on the power play. I don't care that last night we came away with the W even though Gelinas wasn't on the first unit it will catch up to you and you should be trying to do everything in your power to make sure we have the best shot at winning games. Little things like not scoring on powerplays or not killing penalties because you don't have your best guys for those situations out there will result in losses. I just don't get the logic behind them constantly preaching the best players will play but then they don't even put the best pkers and power play guys out there its just stupid. If they had of came back in won I would certainly look back and wonder if we could of had an extra goal had we had our best power play weapons out when they face off is in the offensive zone instead of changing when the puck has been cleared and have to regroup. I know it seems minuscule but for a team that is considered a bubble team and has tremendous trouble scoring the last season you would think they would be at least doing the things they can control like putting the best guys out on the top unit.

Certainly an entertaining game, great to see 5 even strength goals. I think it's almost more important for the offense to get off to that good start, I have more faith in the defense figuring itself out than if the offense started slowly.

If I had to guess, Gelinas would come out for Larsson if anyone, though obviously I'd prefer Salvador. Captain Crutch.

But what if its better to split up Zid and Gelinas? It already seems like they are splitting up Jagr and Elias on the PP so maybe they are going for a more balanced approach. At least they have 2 dmen on each unit.

Yea I was also impressed with Schneider despite the score board he faced a ton a shots. I did think the defense was strong in many points in the game as the flyers where getting lots of shots but all from low scoring areas like the outside most of the of the pucks where hitting Cory right in the chest. I thought I would be upset about Cory's play but all that matters is the w's and I think even if his sv% and Gaa drops a bit now that he is the starter he will still be more then good enough to get us wins and steal us games. Still only the first game we will get sharper as a team and I really hope coaching staff starts to at least do their job and have the proper personal on the ice for the proper situations.

so many things about this team have been mind boggling for years. i just wish they would enlighten us all to their revelations behind such decisions.

I don't mind splitting up Gelinas and Zid. To be honest I don't care who they have paired with Gelinas for a pp I actually think its best he is not with Zids ( Its probably just me but I get the vibe Zids avoids passing to Gelinas as much as he could because he thinks he is the better option ) My main concern is when you start a powerplay you are awarded a draw in the opponents end and that is exactly when Gelinas needs to be in the ice to get that big shot off. I wouldn't of cared if Severson was on the first unit with Gelinas that wouldn't have been an issue. If I was coach I would be putting me best guys out there for a power play or a penalty kill to me especially on a power play as those shouldnt be tough minutes you get to slow the game down and shouldnt be wasted a ton of energy. If a guy like zid can play the first 130 of a pp then gelinas can to. Also having those two back there is likely just as dangerous when we are talking about something going wrong as Kovy was on the point of the pp.

Got a Sens fans offer for Larsson ( like it but we wouldn't be interested in the one piece) He suggested Cowen, Prince and dallas' second for Larsson. Not bad but I don't see a use for Cowan although he might turn it around in our defensive system with much better defensive forwards helping backcheck and what not.

My 6-5 prediction almost came true.

That was quite the wild game. God damn our defense is (frank)ed, especially without Coburn.

Todd Cordell: G1 Recap: Devils' Offense Shines In 6-4 Win Over Flyers
- Todd.Cordell

Todd, pretty accurate summary of last nights game. Two things came to mind for me:

1. Salvador looked out of place on defense. We've got young, mobile d-men, along with Zid and Greene who can both move the puck...then we have Sal. He looked slow and couldn't even use his muscle to prevent that goal at the end of the 2nd. Maybe chalk it up to a rough night, but last nights play is the type of play us fans were really worried about.

2. Watching Jordin Tootoo was so frustrating. I cannot believe we chose him over Ryan Carter. Tootoo did nothing on the forecheck, looked mediocre in his own zone, and took an awful penalty. If he doesn't fight he's probably going to be a non-factor. Carter was used in all situations and was dependable. Ruutu deserves better than to be paired with him and Gionta.

Yea that was a sloppy game haha. It's definitely tough when your top d man to start the year is out. I think if I was a Flyers fan the main thing for me would be that Giroux and Simmonds have started producing which is always good to have those guys going early in the season especially if you are already out Timonen and now Cobourn. For us we are glad to see the goals carrying over from most of pre season but would like to tighten up a bit lol this could be one of the more exciting Devils teams in the past few years with all the young guns on the blue line. Just need to figure out how to get younger up front

I missed the replay on that penalty but I really thought it looked like it wasn't a slash but got called that way because of the broken stick but like I said I just missed the part where they made contact. Sal shouldn't even be in the NHL at this point to me he gets the benefit of the doubt from everyone who makes the decisions is because he has been a warrior for us but thats not enough to keep him around at this point best thing would be for him to realize whats going on around him and be a huge man by stepping down as captian and passing it on to someone else like Greene. That would make me gain all the respect in the world back for him. I am hoping tootoo looked like poop because of nerves he likely wanted to not make any mistakes to show he was the right choice but in doing so was just not effective at all. I am willing to give him a few games to see if he figures out his role but I do miss Carter he was a good player for us and had that work ethic they are always preaching.

I think we would have to clear more space to make room for his contract. I have always liked Jake though. Not sure if we would ever trade to the Flyers as I am pretty sure I recall in one of the questions they do inbetween periods last year that the last time we traded with Philly was when we send Chico there lol

I really hope JJ gets a chance to play Saturday over GIO

I know Gio's numbers were awful because he played a lot on the PK but JJ can play just as well on the PK if not better - I'm just not sure his FaceOff % is better. That is an area we are seriously lacking.

Ruutu - JJ - Brunner would be a pretty balanced 4th line.

I think an interesting approach fourth line wise is the switching between a skill line and a physical line depending on the opponent. For faster more skilled teams ice Rutuu-JJ-Brunner as the fourth, for bigger, more physical teams ice Ruutu-Gio-Tootoo. Just an idea.
