Malhotra has been over 68 percent in the face-off circle in both of Montreal's first two games

Cody Hodgson started the season as a third-line left winger

Sorry, wasn't that you that suggested Hodgson be moved to the wing. Or was that Kesler? I can't remember.

Yeah, I wanted Kes on the wing. IMO putting Hodgson there doesn't make sense. Not sure what Buffalo's thinking... Then again, I haven't kept up on their roster/depth chart, so who knows.

I think they are trying to lose as many games as possible, so putting players in the least likely spot to be successful seems like a good plan. Hodgson will probably get a turn on defense pretty soon.

Calling "Hodgson - Reinhart - Gionta" a "3rd line" is a little misleading based on their skillsets & 5on5 TOI. Gionta & Hodgson were 2nd & 3rd in 5on5 TOI for Buffalo's forwards... Reinhart was further down the list. I just think the Sabres tried to put together some complimentary skillsets.

Lols, Hodgson is totally overrated... can't play center on the sabres and wanted to play ahead of a selke winner here in vancity.

Hope he enjoys the third line minutes...

I don't want to Monday morning QB this thing but that whole debacle left a bad taste in my mouth at the time.

The loses of Malhotra and Samuelsson had a greater impact on this team's general make-up than I suspected it would at the time of their departures. In saying that Samuelsson was already done by then, just not replaced.

Vrbata is the closest thing to a replacement for Samuelsson that we have seen and that key/ringer faceoff guy for the bottom 6 is still missing

I am guessing that Manny has a bit more vision back or he is just playing better- with more confidence since the injury. Towards the end of Manny's time here he would often be out there just for the faceoff. Wish him all the best.

For facts sake, Hodgson played 1st line mins. But who cares about facts, right?

I like Vrbata thus far. We certainly could have used him a few years ago. And agreed, that Manny replacement in the bottom 6 is still outstanding.

100% correct. Samuelsson's skill set had diminished greatly but for a swede he had a very strong personality. It's rare in a swede. Many swedes on our team which makes me believe he was an influential figure in the dressing room.

Manny fell into that same category. Diminished skills but still valuable in other ways.

Getting rid of them was a rookie GM mistake I guess.

Agreed, Samuelsson was more a product of the Viking strain of swedes than much of the modern mellow variety. Kronwall has that too. More than just personality he also had that versatile combination of playmaker, scorer, easily slotting up and down the lineup, and a decent guy on the PP.
