God, I don't want my team to be the first to lose to the Oilers. That would be a shame that I might not be able to recover from. |

Don't worry, Edmonton once they hear "Andddddddddddd now, your VANCOUVER CANUCKS!" they'll poop their pants so much that Eakins will have to go to the ref and tell him that they forfeit. |

Forgot to mention, on 1040 this morning they said that Benning confirmed in his interview on there last night that Bo would get at least his 9 games |

Sad to see what’s happening in Edmonton. That being said do you want the Canucks play the worst team in the NHL another 6 times? It would be nice to see some parity for the Western Canadian teams and watch some entertaining hockey. I hope they fix things. |

Almost happened, thank god for some lucky breaks...(7pp and Burrows glove), but that's hockey.
I still have a few reservations about the team, not about to jump from the bandwagon...but when I look at the pacific powerhouses there's a sesame street song that comes to mind..."one of these things is not like the others" |

That may be so, but I just fail to see how teams like Buffalo and Edmonton will get better. Keep in mind that Edmonton is not TRYING to tank, and this will only increase the gap between bottom feeders and bubble/playoff teams
You are anticipating that teams like Edm and Buff will lose everytime. It is a lottery and every team that missed the playoffs have equal shot of wining draft. If there was lottery draft and Buff wins 1,2 and 3 this year they will effectively be out of the basement and in playoff contention next year.

You lost me here. Also I don't think Buffalo is a McDavid away from playoff contention. That team needs to continue to grow |

That's not true. While every team has a shot, the chances diminish substantially the further up the standings you get. |

I did not say that Buff is McDavid away from playoffs, I said that if there was a lottery system that I am proposing was implemented this year and since Buffalo has 3 first round picks they could realistically win 1st 2nd and 3rd overall picks thus propelling them closer to contending for playoffs. My suggestion is every pick from 1st to 14th is a lottery for the non playoff teams. |

We were discussing a scenario where every non-playoff team has an equal shot |

That is based on the current weighted system, where teams can only lose 1 spot. I am suggesting that spots 1-14 be in a lottery with all teams having equal opp. If you missed the playoffs then you have an equal shot at first overall. |

If the odds for everyone are the same I highly doubt that it is realistic that they win 1,2,3... They would have a 3/14 chance of winning 1OA, which by itself is a long shot. If they did win, then their chances of winning the next two subsequent picks would be even worse, 2/13 and then finally 1/12. Call me a pessimist but those odds aren't great
Edit: If I still remember how to do probability correctly, the chances of them pulling off 1,2,3 are 1/364. Pretty sure the Canucks have a better chance of winning the Cup this year
Edit#2: this is also assuming that both the Isles and the Blues miss the playoffs |

Yeah I prefer the $8.50 grilled cheese sandwiches. You know, the kind that you can make at home for about 2cents. |

Who cares about the odds, you're getting 3 picks in a deep draft. Do your homework right and you will come out pretty good. |

I'm not saying that they won't, only that 1OA + 14+24>>> 10th+14th+24th
This isn't really directed at this year's draft but at the idea of a system where 1-14 picks follow a lottery with all non-playoff teams on equal footing |

I agree but it depends on the draft year. In 2003 picks 10, 14, and 24th produced Andrei Kostitsyn, Brent Seabrook, & Mike Richards, combined they have 4 Stanley cups. |

Yes that example was a little far reaching, but the probability that it is possible is great. Every team will have a 1/14 chance of first overall and 1/13 chance of second overall and so on in declining order. So a team with multiple first round picks and provided that picks are from non playoff teams has a great probability of pulling off successive top picks in the same draft year. Imagine the draft lottery coverage where all GMs wearing their lucky suits and ties and praying. It will make great TV as well. |

All I'm saying is that the main purpose of such a system would be to promote parity and competition, but it assumes that it is within the power of teams like Edmonton, Florida, and Buffalo to become relatively competitive. As we have seen with Edmonton, that is not always the case, and for a variety of reasons such as how receptive FAs are to coming, how much your team can afford to spend, and how your organization is run, teams may not be able to respond to such a system. A system like this definitely makes it more difficult for struggling bottom feeders to crawl out of the basement. Whether or not that is a bad thing is another argument I suppose, as in the case of Florida there may be enough pressure to finally move that team somewhere it will be appreciated. |

Yes, absolutely, but overall that 1st pick has a much better chance of helping you much sooner than the 10th. Even if you trade it, it's got the potential to garner some very significant pieces with which to propel your franchise out of a crummy situation. I don't really see a 1-14 lottery increasing the success rate for bottom feeders |
