Hmm..great article Tim. I'm a little disappointed John Scott wasn't included.

It hurts my mind to talk about him. I've capped myself at once a week now.

I think you need to ask why these players were shooting from range in the first place. Quick shot from a won draw? Dumping on net at a line change/to avoid a turn over/cause a rebound play? Attempted slap pass/deflection that went right to the goalie?

...and, out of interest, how would PP vs EV break down?

However, after years of seeing Sharks scoring 'fluky' goals, I assumed they had an ingrained philosophy to put the puck on the net and good things would happen.

A draw back to a winger isn't typically in the playbook for San Jose, nor is dumping on net for a line change. They usually do a regular dump in and concede possession. The only player that would be affected for the shots above the circles on the PP would be Pavelski when he appears on the point. Marleau, Couture and Wingels don't typically play higher than the circles on the PP.

I think you might be on to something with the ingrained philosophy.

That's what everyone is taught. Obviously, it changes in the NHL with the quality of goaltending, but they aren't going to handle every puck cleanly. In addition, generally the higher skill guys are going to see and recognize if they have someone crashing for a rebound. it could also be a shot in at the end of a shift. I think the sample size is too small to draw anything meaningful from these charts. Look at last year's and compare them to this year's, especially the three big guys. You have to put the shot into it's individual, unique context.
Let them play and watch.
