Glad to see Mrazek is going to get a start...hope it goes well for him and the team shows up.
I hope Weiss is finally ready to produce and earn some of that money. |

Weiss is the next David Booth. They are not built for a hockey market, they thrived in FLA. Beach, Golf, Hockey, hey why not? |

Trade Weiss back to Florida (Wings eat some salary) with a prospect and a pick for Nick Bjugstad |

In other news, I doubt Nestrasil will be claimed. Nothing personal but why pick off a 23-year-old AHL second-liner when every team already has at least 2-3 of these guys in their own system already? Not to mention there are maybe a few dozen more floating around the AHL on 1-way contracts that can be signed by any team at any time.
Judging from both the numbers and my own eyes watching them all play, Nestrasil realistically is not any better than the likes of Ferraro and Callahan. I'm glad Nestrasil got the promotion (at the very least, he earned it with a good preseason) but I also suspect there was some strategy to the decision -- the Wings probably realized that whoever they ended up promoting would very likely need to be waived eventually, and Nestrasil was the easiest of the three to stomach losing.
Still, I expect him to clear and if he does I look forward to seeing him back in GR. I doubt he will ever be much of an NHLer but I think he has the potential to be a pretty excellent minor league pro, if he sticks around North America. |

I don't think he will be claimed either but I think he could become a decent role player at the NHL level. I think he maybe could become a Miller type of forward or maybe given a really defined role like a Holmstrom maybe. He is pretty decent at going into corners and along the boards and using his size to control the puck keeping the opponents from stripping him of it which to me means he could maybe make a decent grinder that can cycle the puck down low.
I don't think he has a future as an offensive type though. |

I could see Winnipeg claiming him. Their top 9 is fine but they could use support for their 4th line even just to help play a possession game without worrying much about offence. Their 4th line isn't producing at all offensively anyway and is too much of a liability to play more than 6 minutes a night. I think he'd be an upgrade over Halischuk, Thorburn and Peluso who don't bring anything offensive to the table and can't maintain possession just to keep the puck out of their own end. And there's really no point in having both Thorburn and Peluso on the roster, waiving Peluso and claiming Nestrasil would give them a different option rather than just having two interchangeable players. |

I don't really disagree with you, but I also think the same could be said about virtually any hard-working, decent minor league forward (especially if they have a little size). I don't think there's anything particularly special about Nestrasil.
To put it another way, I tend to think that the main difference between guys like Miller (who manage to stick around for a while as role guys/PK specialists) and guys who are good AHLers but never get much chance to make the NHL (one, two, or all three of Nestrasil, Callahan, and Ferraro could ultimately fall into this camp) is less a matter of talent or potential and more a matter of timing and luck. When the team has an opening for a cheap grinder/role guy, they'll promote a low-ceiling minor leaguer who's still relatively young and train him to do play that specific role. If he can do it successfully, he'll stick around for a while. If he can't, you call up or sign another guy.
I just suspect being "that guy" has a lot less to do with how good a player you actually are or could be, and a lot more to do with being in the right place at the right time (and then starting your NHL career with a hot streak instead of a slump). Because honestly, I think there are hundreds and hundreds of more or less equally good fringe NHL players out there who could probably hack 9 minutes per night on a fourth line, but there are only so many job openings to go around. |

Aw crap. Always sucks to lose a decent kid to waivers. Maybe he will get a better chance at an NHL career this way though. Still, too bad. |

Good for him, hope he does well there. Not a big loss for the wings. Clears a spot for Pulky or Mantha to be the next injury call up. |

Canes have a spot on the 3rd/4th line for a big guy who can do more than just get punched in the face.
Familiarity with Bill Peters plays a role as well. |

He is strong on the puck and has good vision but doesn't have much for speed or scoring touch. He can be an effective player for you guys. |

That's all we need. The guy Currently in that spot in the roster can hit people and... that's basically it. Seems like a no-brainer to pick him up. Completely understand why the Wings would have waived him though. Hopefully he comes in with a chip on his shoulder. |
