I'm very happy with how things are. It's a very exciting team to watch. Whenever the net was pulled with the old regime I cringed. The old core didn't have what this team does. Hunger and desire to win.
I just wish they'd capitalize more in the first 2 periods. |

Was at the game last night - that was one of the best all around efforts the Flames have put in all year. Colbourne really stepped up after being demoted to the 4th line and even Diaz and Engllend had good moments out there.
Tough stretch coming up - but if they can rattle off a few more games like that they should be well positioned going into the last 1/4 of the season. |

good hockey? He sat in the box for longer than he played against the oilers, you people are all obsessed with 4th line useless players just like last year where mcgratten and westgarth were so great apparently, and everyone wanted to keep them playing third line minutes |

Nope certifiable but I'd be curious what the return would be??? - geta02it
Would be huge with his contract as good as it is, if they fall out of the hunt over the next couple weeks I think they atleast put his name out there.
I bet they could easily get a 1st rounder, top prospect and a young dman in return. |

Theres a difference between playing the Oilers and playing the Jets. I suspect he was told to go stir poop and he did. Look at any of the teams who have had success and its the ability to roll 4 lines, right now the Flames can. I'd still rather see some of the farm hands be given an opportunity but even Diaz has contributed (outside his lone goal) and there is something to be said about the chemistry of this group, even the poopty ones... |

I doubt there isn't a single team who wouldn't jump at the possibility of trading for him. Problem I see is this team will be in the hunt RIGHT to the end and its tough to pull a deal if you're 2 points out with 5 games to go... |

Contributed in both ends. Does he play against the Sharks I wonder. To me he earned a spot. |

From a pure return on asset perspective, I could see them exploring it, but they have a captain right now that is setting the tone every night for the rest of the team. It's one of those moves that could really bite them in the butt if they make it too early.
Get his next contract done, see where you are in 2 or 3 years when, conceivably, the torch can be passed over to Monahan etc. |

I was certain Hartley was going to bench him after the penalty and he didn't, so maybe they are giving him a little leash... |

They only reason I brought it up to begin with is that after next season Gio will be 33 starting a new contract which will probably be around the $7mill a season probably around 5-7 years. If he regresses it could be one of those impossible to move contracts. At 31 I think its safe to say this is his peak, sure he could have years left but I would think we have all learned what happens when you hang on to players to long (Iggy return). |

Top pairing dmen that actually crush possession numbers, lead the league in offense from the blue line, are like unicorns, well you just don't trade those players. Come July 1, you pay him his 7.0 mill per for the next 5-6 years & extend him as early as possible. If you can't resign him by next TDL, then I worry & possibly look at looking at offers at the TDL. Cant see Gio doing that to us. |

Did he get injured after Bogosian rocked him because he didn't play after that hit? |

You can't compare top pairing D to forwards. Replacing scoring forwards is very doable. |

I agree with you Kevin. You just can't find guys like Gio in some magic barrel at the end of some glossy rainbow made of candy canes. The intangibles of having him in the room- being a solid captain who helps develop those around him, a guy who leads by example on the ice, you just can't trade one of those away and not suffer the consequences.
Good teams realize that there is so much more to winning than just plucking individuals and placing them in the line-up, that you recognize the subtleties of chemistry and leadership and try to not FU(K that up for a sexy, unproven return.
2 cents in the bank. |
