Outside of age, almost everything being said about Kane was said about Chris Stewart a year ago.

kane isn't a special player. how anyone can say or imply otherwise makes for good conversation.

buffalo sabres brand? now that is funny.

Except Kane had and still has more athletic ability than Stewart ever did. Stewart was always a big body who skated slow, Kane is a big body but skates fast.

He has the potential to be a special player. At 23 he is far from reaching his peak.

disagree he doesn't have potential to be a special player. Maybe a very good one, not special.

is it also possible that he has reached his peak?

I guess it is subjective to your definition of special. The true "power forward" is a rarity today and Kane definitely qualifies as a power forward. With his combination of size, athletic ability, and skill he has a chance to be a game-changing forward. If given the opportunity (which he should get in Buffalo given their relative weakness at forward), he should be able to consistently give you 20 goals/yr at a minimum but honestly I would put that nearer to 30. Now is he "special" in that he will be the facilitator of his line, no I don't believe that. But to me as a power forward that's not his responsibility. Shoot, hit, and overall play a big man's game is his job and he should be able to do that as he's always done. The uptick in stats that I believe will come stems from a consistent if not permanent top 6 or top line presence.

Personally I don't see how anyone can argue that he has reached his peak. He has spent too much time not on a scoring line to say he can't get better. Everyone who points to his stats (or lack thereof) as reasoning for this also needs to account for how or why he didn't produce to those levels.

There is obviously risk involved from a Sabres perspective, not denying that. But from a rebuild timeline perspective Kane not only fills a need but also fits that timeline better than Myers.

He's a top 3 forward on almost any team. On average, he would be a team's best forward.

He's pretty good.

not arguing that he has reached his peak. You also have to take into consideration that it is possible he has. not saying he has but it is a possibility no?

he has hit 30 goals once. when he can consistently get to that level then the conversation can change to his he special. Crosby is special. stamkos special. kane not special.

Of course its a possibility. That's why I said there is risk involved for the Sabres. But there's also risk involving Myers on whether he can take the next step as a d-man. Simply 2 more examples of the ever-present dilemma for teams to balance between potential and present-day value/on-ice contribution.

I will agree that he has to hit those levels to graduate to special status. This is also why I bolded potential before special when I made my initial post.

Or maybe special means rare. Which in this case, Crosby and Kane are special.

Did't the Sabres already go through two former 30 goal scoring first rounders and one is still there that twice put up 28 goals? None of which were thirty years of age with them? I just wanted to make sure I understand.

Gotta wish Staff and Myers a good run at the playoffs and hopefully a cup run...some good character, skill and humor (Drew) leaving the town.

It was interesting to hear Travis Yost, former infamous Ottawa hockeybuzz blogger, on WGR Yesterday. He's a TSN analytics person now and was raving about E. Kane's advanced stats...they were seriously impressive and the reason the Sabres gave up so much future in the deal.

For all the "Tanker" fans out there...anybody just a little worried that Teddy Nolan has been put in the crosshairs, beaten up along the ropes and he just might harness a run out of this "island of misfit toys"? If you were him, wouldn't you just write 'Beat Edmonton' on the chalkboard and make that your teams only goal...cuz like f**k Tim Murray sorta hangin' him out to dry? And to be clear...I want them to finish 30th!! And I love Tim Murray.....But Teddy, geez, he doesn't really deserve to get thrown under the bus for this mess.

well the Sabres better win the cup in the next 3 years because Kane contract ends and will become a UFA in 3 years and the Canucks will immediately grab him. by the time Kane is at his peak point, that is when he is a Canuck player. I'll bet Kane will continue to act like a d*** until he gets traded to Vancity

His numbers are similar to Seguin with the bruins, Nash with the bluejackets early in his career. Hes gonna have an elite #1 center dishing him the puck the rest of his career, we have no doubt he'll score 40 multiple times.
