Ryan, puck possession has been an issue a good portion of the year for New York. They have been a team that wins despite those struggles. A good portion of Rangers' fans wish they were better in the advanced metrics, but as long as they continue to win- as they have to date - that weakness will be tolerated. I doubt they will change their style with the postseason upon us. |

Just goes to show fancy stats mean little to nothing. The Rangers finished the season 6-1. |

It really seems the Penguins have had some awful bounces/luck in the last couple weeks. I always thought a team is turning the corener when the lose games they should win. The Penguins have played well enough to win some of the past 5 games. I think this series will be closer than it appears. |

Zero bottom 10 puck possession teams have won the SC since tracking the metrics (since 2005). If it meant nothing, bottom 10 puck possession teams would win the SC as often as top 10 puck possession teams.

Rangers Corsi has declined sharply over the last 20 games, the Rangers have also earned 29/40 points in that time. You're also saying low Corsi is overcome by high shooting and save %. In other words capitalizing on chances and clutch goaltending wins. How novel!
In other words, good pitching and defense beats good hitting. Again, fancy stats are tools, not the gospel |

Sample size? In the big picture we are looking at a millimetre on a metre ruler. In another 40 or 60 Stanley cups you 'may' find that figure changes. By that time the current 'advanced stats' will be the butt of everyone's jokes & analytical data will be advanced, having most movements & actions logged giving you data that will blow your mind & guys like Ryan will walk around town with big.........smiles! |

Puck possession is one thing, there are literally millions of factors at play at any given time in a hockey game. We should track them all and chart them. I call dibs on counting ice shavings after a player stops. Think we can pause time to count each one in the air? I think we are the best team at ISA (ice shaving average). It shows that our team takes advantage of the fresh ice giving us a good start. |

They have. They've played dominant hockey at times but zero puck luck.
I was listening to the Fan over the weekend and they had Jonathan Bombulie (Baby Pens beat writer) on the show. He had an interesting take on the Pens plight. He said if the Pens coaches apply innovative and adaptive coaching, they might have a punchers chance.
My thoughts are they should turn the neutral zone into mud. Slow the Rags down and counter attack off of turnovers. Basically we should play like other teams play us. All season long teams have been flying through the neutral zone....especially during this slide. The Pens have no chance if they let the Rags attack our weak D with speed and momentum. |

Yes it's funny that the team that puts more pucks in the net wins, no matter what else in the game occurs - what's that advanced stat called? |

10 years is more than sufficient sample size. The current metrics will likely be replaced by better predictive metrics as soon as the sensors are installed in the pucks/jerseys.

Jan, Dan Boyle has the highest Corsi of any regular Rangers defenseman this season. I think that's all that needs to be said regarding Corsi. |

Forget the years word - you are talking 10 units only. Small to very small sample size.
There is only 1 cup per year, you have 1 subject matter only. Now the more subject matter the more clearer the picture etc etc etc. I agree that as soon as electronics are introduced to collect data there will be an explosion of material that you will produce from the data available. |
