Who do I have for Monday's randomly selected report card? Today's hint: I will stick near the bottom of the class, and a player that might be destined for remedial classes
i'd say greening, but he doesn't even deserve a report card. he's the equivalent of that kid who sits in the corner eating the glue
so i'm gonna guess that it's either michalek or gryba |

Michalek wasn't that bad if we're talking about bottom of the grades list. I would guess Gryba as well or possibly Legwand. |

Cowen still plays in the NHL?
I thought he went the way of Pascal LeClair. |
|
|

Cowen's scouting report when we drafted him is that he was a few years away. I think it would be a mistake to trade him unless you are getting a cornerstone piece back in the trade.
I like Cowen, he plays hard and you don't often find NHL Dmen that like to doll our punishment and Cowen likes to do that.
He'll continue to get better, he knows he'll be better next year, trading him wouldn't be a mistake but I don't want to see him go based on cap issues or space - Boro as a #7 is perfect, Cowen in the bottom pairing without the pressure of having to be a top 4 would be great for him. |

you say that like you think he's been getting better............when in actual fact, he's gotten progressively worse as his carrer has gone on. |

Is there a player on Ottawa who gets criticized less for never meeting expectations then Michalek? change this guys name to Cowen and the fans would be ready to trade him - useful player but he has 34 goals in the last 3 years, average of 11 goals/year. Cowen has 10 goals in the last 3 years. |

remember when Chara wouldn't stay on his feet for 60 minutes? Cowen will get better, the big Dman always take longer to come along - but when they do they are cornerstone pieces for a franchise. |

there have been a ton of "big men" who've enjoyed a lot of success, who were drafted around cowen (hedman, OEL, myers, bogosian, gudbrandson, etc)
virtually every d-man taken near cowen in teh draft (be it the same year, year before, or year after) have turned into, at the very least, good NHL d-men. pretty much the only d-man picked in the top 10-15 between 08-11 that ended up being considered a bust was luke schenn, and even he makes cowen look good.
people keep looking at cowen, and comparing him to chara..............but for every chara, there are probably 100 cam barkers, keith aulie's, or colton teubert's who turn into giant busts despite all the hype. |

pretty sure milo gets criticized all the time....ESPECIALLY after he signed his extension. he's in virtually everyone's list of "trade them right (frank)ing now" players. |

while true Cowen like you said has shown in his first full NHL year and he has shown that he can dominate physically, skate, and he has some moves from time to time. He also has a massive shot he can unload - so everything is there he just needs to play.
To say most of our team had low confidence with Paul mc would be an understatement. I think they should go into next year with Cowen in a bottom with Gryba or our AHL Dman of the year and let him know he has some rope to play and just develope his game. Chara looked a thousand times better playing on a steady team like Ottawa instead on NYI and looked good next to a Phillips - Cowen with the right partner and conifdence from the coach would be huge.
You need guys like Cowen to win, every Cup winning team has one. I like our depth but to give up on him now would be a mistake |

we have one....his name is methot
i firmly believe that cowen was ranked high in the draft mainly due to his size, with teams hoping that his hockey IQ would eventually catch up to his physical presence. it seems pretty obvious to me that if he can't even be considered a competent NHLer by the age of 24, there's a pretty good chance that what we see now is what he is.
is there a chance he turns it around........obviously, but i wouldn't put money on it.
edit - i do think giving up on him would be stupid......but not because i think he'll turn it around. rather, i think the return for him at this point (given his play, and relatively terrible contract) would be so low that you're better off just keeping him and praying that he turns into a serviceable 2nd pairing guy.
i really do hope i'm wrong, and will gladly eat my crow if i am..........but cowen has bust written all over him. |

It is tough because experience-wise he is about the level of 22 years old...while body-wise he is 35 with the injuries. Experience will come and he will develop that way...if his body lets him. |

agreed......but hockey iq-wise, he's like 15.
i find the mistakes he makes on the ice are almost 100% mental. he just looks like he never knows where he's supposed to be, or where he's supposed to go with the puck. injuries or not, if he hasn't learned that by now.........that's a big red flag IMO. |

Methot is a good example, didn;t play his first full NHL season until he was 24 - drafted lower but it shows that some players need longer - Cowen doesn't skate like Methot but I get your point, but a confident Cowen is 1000% more effective then any player we have on our depth chart.
He also won the Calder when he was 16 and was a WJC player, rated not because of his size but because of his skating and shot, and willingness to play mean |

I don't think his hockey sense is all that bad personally. When he was paired with Karlsson it was a different story, because you almost never really know where he is going to be and what he is going to do. That takes a special player with better reaction and reading of the play than what Cown has, but a lot of defensemen would find themselves in the same boat in that role which is why Methot got the bucks he did. |

I don't know...........it seems to me that people are grasping at straws with cowen. even his rookie season, which everyone points to, wasn't that great. I have seen almost nothing from him to suggest that he'll ever be more than an average bottom pairing guy.........that we're paying 3.1 mil for. |

I don't hold out much hope of Cowen reaching his potential (competent second pairing) in an Ottawa jersey. Sometimes a change of address and a fresh start are needed and I strongly believe that to be the case here.

Cowan and Weircioch will battle for the #4 spot with Ceci this year, with the loser playing in the bottom pairing.....
Our D is going to be the envy of the league in 2-3 years when we are challenging for the final four....
Karlsson, Methot, Ceci, Weircioch, Cowan, Borocop, Gryba, Wideman, Claessen..... that's awesome depth... with the only one being 'old' being Methot, who by then might be in the #4 slot with Cowan...... |

I am very hard on Cowen I do think he has potential because of his size. But he is clearly not working in the Ottawa system. I say we package him and other together and see what we can get for him |

I think we have a good core group of young D. obviously karlsson and in 3-4 years they could be really good in the NHL. but they might need one or two more pieces. |
