First?

I felt the Avs may have sacrificed some size for talent.

It was nice that Joe was given a warm reception from the Florida crowd. Man still commands respect! and classy from panthers fans

they were giving it to sweeney though

Seems like a good weekend for the Avs. Would have liked to have ROR around for long term, but happy they got something for him.

This may as well be the Avs best 48 hours in the last 5+ years. Perfect draft, perfect trades and so far perfect UFA. Couldnt be any happier

Seriously...

I've pretty much lost all respect for ROR. It's not like he doesn't *know* how much his agent is asking.

Anybody THAT interested in raping their team salary-cap-wise (and isn't named Toews or Kane), well, it's been fun but don't let the door hit you on the way out. You can get TWO really good players for $8mil.

Good luck in Buffalo (or wherever he ends up). I'm glad this particular chapter of the Avs history is closed.

Avs can easily sign a top 4 defensemen and another middle tier defensemen with the cap room that O' Reilly was using up.

17 million in cap room is a lot of flexibility.

I think we should sign one top-4 guy then save some room for next season on Barrie, Johnson and MacKinnon extensions.

I see that Parenteau has been placed on waivers.

He fit in really well with the Avs when he was healthy. I'm assuming with the buyout, he could be gotten pretty cheap.

He adds depth and a little scoring for not much money. Might be worth a look...

Barrie, Johnson and Mackinnon will get about 9m in raises which gives the Avs around 8 to play around with. They will surely go after a Dman in UFA and from there they will also have some room to play around with if they choose to get another depth player.

What is even better is that now the contracts of Holden, Stuart and Berra are no longer a problem and that them along with when Iggy comes off the books leaves the Avs in an excellent position cap wise for now and the foreseeable future.

Not to mention they dropped down 8 spots in the 2nd round and got both their picks from the Stuart trade back from SJ.

Avs have been killing it this offseason.

Roy traded him because he didnt trust him in his own zone and then he was benched in MTL for a large portion of the season for the same reasons. It is possible I guess because he plays well with Duchene but I would say it is unlikely.

My guess is he goes to NYI for cheap

I think we could get away with signing two defensemen this year. We are going to lose a few contracts that will aide in clearing up more cap room. Defense was our biggest mistake. So if we spend about 12 million this year that will leave us with 5 going into next year. We lose Tanguay at 3.6, Bordy at 1, Guenin and cliche at around 1 total. That will give us the 9 million needed for next season to sign our big names..

Tangs still has a lot left in the tank and I would be shocked if he didnt retire and Av. I think he will get a small pay cut but I doubt he is gone from the team.

Agreed, Tanguay will be on the team a while. I hope the Avs go after Sekera pretty hard and leave it at that. With that addition the Avs wouldn't be cup contenders or anything, but the team is improved. Keep building over the next year or two and wait for some of the prospects to be ready.

Bieksa could be had cheaply... stalled on the deal to SJ.. worth a shot for a couple/3 years?

Looks like they are asking a 2nd... I mean...

Or Sekera? Either one.. do it.

I agree he can be resigned, but he has to know it won't be for the 3.5 he is currently getting. I imagine he would take a pay cut to about 2.5 and perhaps do year/year deals like Super Joe did towards the end of the career.

Oh yes, 3.5 is too much. But if he performs as he did last year, 2+ is worth it. Year to year would be a good idea.

Hejduk was another good example of this.

Sekera I would be okay paying top dollar for. Irwin or anyone in that middle range not so much, because I would like Duncan Siemens to have a real shot of making the lineup this season. At the very least some time to try and prove himself after all these many years of waiting.

Do we think Rantanen starts on the big club or gets some AHL seasoning? If nhl, who does he play with?

I think this team is making a mistake if it gets more than one defenseman. At some point their going to need to leave room so some of the prospects can come in. It can also be petty tough when there is too much turnover. This team isn't winning the cup this season so add one defensive partner for EJ and call it a day.

Sekera/Ehrhoff/Martin - EJ
Zadorv - Barrie
Holden - Redmond

Stuart - Guenin

Then when injuries hit, give Siemens or Elliott their chances. Hopefully they will play good enough to where Roy can't send them down. Then they take Redmond's spot and trade him for whatever you can get.

Adding that 2n'd D would force Roy to push a one way contract down to San Antonio which would take playing time away from the buttload of D prospects already down there. If things go right, Sekera or Barrie will be on the 3rd pair making this an amazing D.

My guess we see what happens in preseason

If he has a really good pre-season:
- give him 9 games and see where he is at and if he falters, send him to San Antonio

If he doesn't have a great pre-season:
- AHL since he never played in CHL so he is elidgable
-Maybe one more season in Europe and co.e back ready for next year

If they don't think he's ready they should send him back to Europe so they don't burn a year on his ELC
