it looks like the Oilers are going to have a long hard season with the boners still with the team.
Cant help but wonder why they keep players that do nothing but plug up roster spots.

As a fan on the outside, it looks as though management sees this year as a...shudder.... evaluation year. Which if you look at the bigger picture may not be the worst thing. See how Schultz and Yak perform, if Talbot can be a starter. Next off-season we will have Nikitin's entire cap hit gone, Purcell will be gone, Scrivens more than likely. That's some good money to put to better use than Franson.

I still think you can probably get out of Nikitin's contract at some point this year. Is he really going to like the AHL? Or just mutually terminate and go to the KHL after a month or so?

At this point none of the young guys really have proved they deserve to be here. Rather have Ference/Nikitin on the club instead of playing Nurse/Reinhart just because there is no other option.

We had this last year with centers, kinda glad there is competition.

this could be better in the long run, as players may sign here as free agents down the road knowing they stick with their contracts unlike the Philadelphia's of the league.

I think he would be insane to mutually terminate a 4.5M dollar contract. He's never making that much money again (in 1 year).

I am 100% ok with maintaining the status quo right now. I don't think we are bottom 10 team with what we have, and this will give Nurse and Reinhart a chance to get some chemistry in the AHL. Also, while adding Franson would be worthwhile, there is a lot of money coming off the books next year, and who knows what will be available. Also, what if Talbot doesn't work out? Next year there will be serious money for a goaltender, should we need it. Finally, despite missing the playoffs for too long, next year shouldn't be a playoffs or bust year. I think we can make it, but if not this will be a good year for development of the younger guys, and a reboud/prove it year for the young guys.

We need some good veterans like Phaneuf

Niki -Niki and captain fitness still here. Schultzie taken to arbitration to give him a raise.... Those moves are very puzzling..... More than any other move Chia has done... Does he know something we don't?

He will retire a Leaf.

Not sure why everyone is so horny for a buyout. It's not gonna happen, why would we want to waste cap on Nikitin 2 seasons from now? We don't need it this season to overspend on a plug like franson.

Well stated. I'd rather suffer though this one season and be rid of Nikitin and Purcell.

Someone might take Ference at a reduced salary for veteran D for a playoff push (if we are lucky)
