I remember Bob Clarke telling the St Jacques story on comcast one afternoon. I think his version had Moose running up to the draft table (Clarke for whatever reason had left the table) yelling "Clarkie says take St Jacques, Clarkie says take St Jacques!"
Remember when there were 9 and 10 rounds to the draft? Kimmo Timonen was a 10th rounder. Considering the percentage of players who are drafted who actually make it to the NHL, do you think that it would be beneficial to go back to a longer draft with one or two more rounds?
in the early days we had 2 young good goalies and it would be exciting to hear the starting goalie...the Flames had 2 good goalies in Myre and Bouchard.
If every player played with his enthusiasm, we'd be...well, better.
That St, Jacques trade was a great one for the Flyers. St. Jacques and Brendl for Kapanen and Ryan Bast. Not only did the Flyers win the trade, it was a "good hockey trade." There were no $$ implications involved (although Kapanen likely had the highest salary). We could use more played like Sami as well as Podein.

Podein with Otto and Klatt was such a good checking line. Combined with Brind'Amour, and others, under Terry Murray, when they had a lead late in games, it was pretty much over with.

ryan bast, another hyped dman who didn't pan out. though the flyers didn't draft him.
He got a lot of hype because of his adequate junior numbers and his high PIM totals. Sadly, he was never more than a very poor man's Michel Petit. - jmatchett383
petit was an nhl dman. bast wasn't. despite his numerous travels petit wasn't that bad a player imo.

No, Petit wasn't bad. He wasn't really good, but he had a role and did it well. That's why I said he was a very poor man's Petit. When Bast wasn't out there racking up the PIMs, he wasn't contributing much. Petit at least was an adequate bottom-pair defender, didn't handle the puck like it was a time bomb, and was a fairly decent lightweight when he had to throw them.
Edit: My favorite Petit fight:
I love it more for the post-fight "I think Owen Nolan should have stuck to scoring goals" more than the fight itself.

he had some offensive game. wasn't a slug. good enough to play as long as he did

I'm thinking he could be right behind Mike Sillinger in record number of teams played for. Didn't he play for like 9-10? Not saying he's bad, just that he moved around a lot, filling a need on several teams.

I think with the the guys they have now (the younger guys especially: Couts, Laughton) they have a chance to get that dominant defensive forward style again.
I like what we currently have with PEB and White and VV. Adding Laughton to the group in the future will also help. All and all, I like the direction the entire club has moved over the past few years.
