Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks Trade Bonino, Clendening to Pittsburgh for Brandon Sutter Jim Benning shocked us out of our summer slumber on Tuesday when he traded Nick Bonino and Adam Clendening to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Brandon Sutter and an exchange of draft picks.

I've said this before but my judgement of him will wait until we see what kind of players Virtanen, Sven, Vey and Markstrom turn out to be.

His strength is supposedly talent evaluation and I think he has hitched his horses to those players specifically, If Virtanen is a top line player, Sven and Vey are able to provide offense and Markstrom can be a #1, I will be lauding Benning as great talent evaluator.

Stupid logic. He can step up with Bonino here as well, there's no guarantee that WD won't use Sutter as much as he did Bonino. Both players traded are similar, except one is cheaper and the team that took on the more expensive player also gave up the higher draft pick and a prospect.

The trade is a bit of a wash really. Like Sutter better as a 3LC than Bonino, like Carol also thought Clendening was meh. Mostly upset at the 2nd rounder for a conditional 3rd. But based on our awesome drafting, that's not a big deal, is it?

Clendening is pretty meh, he didn't impress in Utica. It's just that asset management and poor value that makes this annoying. Plus that once again they took on more cap, the money freed up from the Bieksa/Kesler deals is getting used up.

As a Pens fan, I won't miss Sutter in the least. I think his analytics are very indicative of the quality of player that he is. I wish him well in the future as he seems to be a good guy but I really think this is a terrible move for Vancouver.

I wish to see McCann turn into everything I hope for that kid. From personal experience, guys that are extremely given and somewhat arrogant have the most success, even the less talented ones.

I really hope he puts up a good showing in training camp!!

1. I've said his drafting is decent, Ehlers is looking like the better pick over JV so far, that could come back to hurt big time. It's an improvement over Gillis who set the bar pretty low.

2. It's clear that he's not trying to tank, otherwise he'd want cap flexibility so he can potentially take on a bad contract from another team in a trade to help the future or eat salary easily when trading a vet. Also he could do what Calgary did and threaten a team with a potential offer sheet for their top RFA, but instead the team is near the cap limit. And when you have a team full of overpaid players, they don't have much trade value which means it'll be harder to acquire draft picks and prospects for them to help the rebuild.

1. Using the fact that Ehlers could potentially, possibly, perhaps become the better player within the next 3-5 years to discount a GM's drafting ability is grasping at straws.

2. Cap flexibility? After this coming season, Vrbatta, Sutter, Prust and Hambuis could be flipped for further assets or simply come off the books, freeing up over 14 million. The following year Burrows and Higgings are up as well. How is that not flexibility?

Evaluating the draft record above all else is something that makes sense when judging a head scout (like a Ron Delmorme). Trades, coaching, and all the other particulars are much more in the GMs wheel barrow. Therefore Virtanen, McCann, etc wouldn't be the decider for me.

The trades that you note would be much more relevant IMO. And those 3 names (Sven, Vey, Markstrom) have pretty sizeable question marks regarding their abilities to have an impact on this organization's future.

I honestly don't think GMs should be given a 5+ year window into their way of doing things before they can be judged.

They play a totally different style of game, it's hard for some to look past numbers. Not implying that's what you do Nucker, just a general statement. Ehlers is a small talented junior player, like Shinkaruk was in junior.

Virtanen can play a heavier game yet still put up points, I would have been happy with either but I'm definitely NOT unhappy they picked Jake.
