Good article paul. Carcillo's efforts and other's similar to his are great, and more of it is needed in the pro sports world, and in the layman's world as well.

Courageous of you to open up on a blog like this as well. Great blog sir.

Hi Stewart. Great write up. I had a massive heart attack after playing a league game at 48 years old. Played my whole life and the one thing that threw me in a horrible depression was thinking] I would never play the game I enjoyed so much. I hit the bottle hard for a good while. I couldn't even walk without support. Like many, I never understood depression and always believed it was a state of mind or weakness. It took 2 years of very hard work but now, I play twice a week and gotten past that. It's a terrible affliction but can be managed as long as one identifies and seeks help or support. Being a Habs fan I watched a game not so long ago and saw Todd playing on NHLN and noticed him. I was a fan and I believe your comments of him were right on point. Just looked like a great guy. Thanks Stewart. Gene

Thanks Paul. Military personnel, public service personnel, and sport figures have some support, but not enough in my book. Insurance companies don't want to shell out the money, and many businesses find it easier to replace people than it is to support people. Once the stigma surrounding mental health care is removed, we can move forward with more compassion, and understanding of this difficult to measure situation.

Thank you very, very much Mr. Stewart. Your honesty and candidness really is both much appreciated and needed. The analogies you made with having repairs to various items having to be brought to professionals for fixing really made a lot of sense. Hopefully, if anyone is suffering with these painful thoughts, they will be able to reach out and ask for assistance. Obviously it is easier said than done...but you never know what tomorrow might bring or what might be around the proverbial corner. Excellent blog.
