Bill,

The hockey talk last night was beyond excellent, great stories and some awesome insight into prospects, the system, goalies, etc. I hope, even though it was explained as a one off, that something like this could be done a few times a year. I really think there was some great banter back and forth between everyone.

I wonder if Leier and Laughton will crack the 8 minute mark tonight.

If Medvedev is healthy, he needs to play. Sit either Schultz or Manning, but get the Russian back in. No one in their right mind can look at the Flyers roster and not see that they could use another player with both speed and skill on D.

Absolutely. I'm so confused by this, only reason I will accept is Medvedev is actually hurt. Also can Couterier please score a goal or do anything on offense tonight? Guys were giving it to Matt Read yesterday but what about this guy, do something, I'm sick of hearing he gets bad assignments and O-zone starts.

Something like a perfect backhand saucer pass to put a teammate in one on one with the goalie? Hopefully if he does that again the teammate will actually be able to finish.

Nobody was "giving it to Matt Read" yesterday. There were like 5-6 posts debating whether or not he's been good.

I agree completely, like everyone on this team, Couturier needs to produce more offensively in terms of points. But in terms of doing something, Couturier does a lot of things for this team.

I get with Medvedev's age he doesn't seem to be a solution long term in the Flyers' plans, but what are they seriously looking at with Manning? Do they think he's going to wake up one day and be Bobby Orr?

If you're trying to win games now it's Medvedev over Manning all day every day. Even if Medvedev is only a band aid solution to the team's defensive woes.

Heck, I'd put him in over Schultz. Even if you give him Schultz' minutes and match-ups, it's not like Schultz has been fantastic at his job.

MDZ-Gudas
Medvedev-Schenn
Schultz-Ghost

Every pairing has a puck mover, and a defensive guy.

Looks okay to me, with 1 exception.

I know I'm biased, but I really don't like Nick Schultz. He just wasn't as bad as everyone else last year so we he was the best by default, which isn't saying much. This year, he's getting the "tough minutes" and doing an, at best, below adequate job. If you want to keep giving Manning his shot, then I don't agree, but at least there's a reason. There is no reason to keep putting Nick Schultz out there when Medvedev, in limited action, has looked better in most if not all facets of the game. Basically, I'd switch Schultz with Manning.

Here's the deal, if we want Couturier to score more, despite those who are sick of hearing about his usage and deployment, perhaps giving him some help. In the LA game, he played 29 total shifts in the game, 16 of which were zone starts, in which only 4 of those zone starts were OZ starts. He was matched up all game against the Carter line. Not only that, but he played most of the night at ES, with Schultz and Schenn as the D pairing behind him. Not exactly known as puck movers and offensive defenseman. Certainly, there are areas where Couturier can be better, such as finishing his chances, but tough to produce offense in that situation. The fact that he and his linemates can hold their own in shot differential, is pretty strong, and goes a long way towards winning.

Shot differential shows that you are going in the right direction, but all the shots in the world don't matter if there are no goals. And yes, I know you said he needs to produce more, and I think most on here agree. But basically, I don't care how many shots a player or his line take if none go in.

I think Manning is mediocre at everything and should only be used in case of multiple injuries.

It's interesting to look at the team's production with OT points removed. There's really only a few guys who don't need to improve.
