Nice piece Michael. For me, Risto's big questions are:
Will Risto become fearless and feared? This one is on him.
How well can he manage his time on ice to avert late-season slumps? I don't think this is his concern to address. This is a question for the guys in ties behind the bench. But it's real - he looked like less of a player as February rolled into March.

I think with B.) the problem with that will be fixed with giving him a legit number 2 so all of the pressure isn't on him.

He did seem to up his physical game later in the year. There were games where I swore he was Zads because he was even taking himself out of plays to make hits. I want him to find the balance.
Agreed on the ice time though. It's like when we had Myers and he was doing okay here. When we limited his minutes he was able to perform but Myers couldn't do #1 minutes. Another top defenseman could help in that situation.

part a)--yup
part b)--I think he learned a lot about managing ice time this season but there's plenty more to learn and that will come with more experience...he's smart enough to figure it out

Mike, hate to derail the conversation from a good blog, but do you guys think that if Tampa goes deep in the playoffs again, does Stamkos's value drop?

Ha ha funny. I'm just getting worried that if we pay him what he's rumored to get that it will take away from our ability to resign guys or build a well rounded team of 4 solid lines in the future. I'm just starting to think he's a guy with a great shot and he's a guy who racks up a lot of points on plays start in the zone.

I thought that if he got a ring he'd be more open to go to a team that might not be competetive for a bit. I don't know if it really lowers it because it's not exactly the same team minus Stamkos. It's not like they plugged in a career AHL guy and they're getting the same production. They put in a guy who was at one point considered one of the best prospects and now he's playing with a chip on his shoulder.
Biggest thing is it's Free Agency so it's going to be a bidding war and whoever gets him will overpay. The team that gets him will celebrate, the other teams will go "pff I didn't want to pay that much anyways". He'll produce for 4 years of his contract but probably never to the level of money that he'll get just because it'll be too high and then in 5 years all the other teams will start to say "Told you not to pay him" even though he was top 10 in goal scoring each of those years.
I just hope that we're the team to overpay. Or not. Either way we're okay. I just want to be okay faster

He will. But you get guys that can play next to him and he hopefully makes better. Like Crosby's linemates before this year. They were never all-stars by themselves but next to him they were great. If Stamkos can make Jack and Sam even better it's a good thing.

nope, don't believe it will affect his status at all...stamkos is proven

risto seemed more focused when the team was struggling in the first half of the year and more reckless in the second half of the year
sekera with jam the second half (like when sekera was benched for a long stretch and flew out of the gates and was a 3 star for the week) - homiedclown

I don't know if I agree with that. I would like to believe that someone that competitive wants to just keep winning. Truthfully I don't understand why he doesn't want to be in Tampa. If I were in his shoes, and I had the pick of the litter, Tampa would be at the top.

Word, the thought just crossed my mind and I watched Tampa do away with Detroit last night. But again Tampa also has very good goaltending and other strengths.

This is also very true - Buffalo--Sabres
Not saying he wouldn't, I'm saying that if I know that I have x amount of years to at least win 1 and I get that one at least I know that I have done that. Then if I was the guy who wanted to do something long term like a building project in Toronto that might yield more but have a higher chance of failure I'd be more inclined.
Analogy for me is if I was trying to get a company started and I finally got one to succeed I'd be more inclined to invest in something a bit riskier than if I was still trying to get that first one off the ground. Obviously it's up to his personality. Like when they got Mario to come here "You can go other places and carry the torch or you can come here and light the torch". What does he want, the trophy or the potential for the legacy if he were to win in a place like Toronto?
Again, this is all speculation and now means nothing since he's out. July 1st will be fun but I'm ready for Babcock part 2
