Nice to know that successful teams like Toronto and Arizona are leaning heavily on analytics.

I'm beginning to believe more & more that ownership is more involved in hockey ops than the President or GM are willing to admit. It's pretty obvious that rebuilding is not an option and renovating is the ticket.

Benning on Hamhuis, I'll just leave this here:

Benning : "We are still talking to Dan, we would still like to have Dan on board so we will try and figure that out." #Canucks

seems very likely that they want the playoff dollars, and don't want to risk attendance tanking further.

I know it's a different sport, but the whole "Mnoeyball", Billy Beane thing. The Oakland A's have won jack sh!t with all that data.

The fancystats is a curious topic for sure. At some point and statistically speaking, statistic and analytic will probably win this battle. The question is, are we in that time now? or is it when the number cruncher stumble on a better way to analyse the data?

Jim may be going against the grain here and it seems like that is the popular vote on this. This off season will be key on whether he is done as a GM or not. They miss the playoffs and the Benning days will be in the books as a failed hiring. If not, he may prove that there is still work to do on the analytic side of the game.

Vancouver is a very fickle hockey market. In the winter, there is an abundance of things to spend your entertainment dollar on.

When the Canucks are successful, they become a hot ticket and many people in the stands are just there for status.

@fiveandagame It won't let me quote you for some reason but I've brought up the same thing before.. Baseball is a completely different game though because of the salary cap BUT moneyballs has been around for decades and the teams that win don't blink an eye at it

It was once said the Chicago Blackhawks were head and front of the analytics brigade.

Leafs fans argued against analytics for a long long time. Watch the games dammit was our favourite saying

Love the Nilsson signing. He's going to be a great 3rd pair d man for years to come. Defense is taking shape nicely, just need to trade Edler and/or Sbisa.

Vancouver is a very fickle city in general.. Most of the people in metro Vancouver are what most of us consider new to the area.. They weren't around for the Pacific coliseum and 94.. Canucks were the cool thing when they moved here, they haven't gone through the tough years. And Fransisco is an Italian real estate developer, he cares about money and that's it.. I think we would've been a lot better off with a certain Dallas stars owner

Bowman got them started on analytics.....They built the core with Tallon at the helm.

That's true.

Although I only moved to Vancouver as an adult I always had roots there. I spent 20 years and left.

“I’ll be perfectly honest with you,” he says. “We won a Stanley Cup in Boston and we didn’t use analytics.”

"As Willes points out, that Stanley Cup in Boston happened five years ago, and the NHL landscape has changed since then....."

BUT THEY STILL WON THE CUP DIDNT THEY? - you stupid PR&*K

Analytics or not - teams have been winning cups for a long time before these advanced stats ever made a lick of difference - we just had our scouting reports that were based on their EYE - what we saw on the ice - you see a player making good or bad decisions on the ice and you trust your coach/mgt to correct those mistakes or praise the right things. Its exactly the same with the Moneyball-era of stats...... Stop using it as the foundation for your arguments

Why does a team have to win or lose a trade - its F&*KING STUPID!!! each team has different needs and they make changes based on that. We needed a solid Dman and we didn't need another possibly 2-3 line center - boom make a change. End of story.

I think I've been spending too much time outside....all this fresh air is giving me too much time to think

I don't know what that has to do with anything. FA is a Vancouverite to the core.

Having said that, I do agree with the general tone of your post. FA seems to run the team as a revenue generator rather than a billionaire's toy. You can't fault him for that. Gagliardi was my first choice but we lost that lottery as well.

Just seems that FA is a businessman first and a hockey fan second. Either that, or he's a typical canucks' fan: tempermental and doesn't have the patience for a rebuild.
