They will have to eat lots of salary if they want any type of valuable return |

Even 50% on both him and Clarkson should be enough to afford Seth Jones |

It will be a straight cap-dump move. They don't expect any kind of return.
They need to dump salary to re-sign Jones.
Vancouver can handle the salary...
I'd trade the #5 pick, the future 2nd rounder that Columbus owes us for signing Torts, CHL Center Dmitry Zhukenov and Chris Higgins (we retain $1 mil of his salary)
For #3 over-all and Scott Hartnell.
Columbus saves $3.5 mil in cap, gains a poor-man's version of Hartnell, a B-level prospect, and a 2nd rounder, while still picking in the top 5 at the draft. |

There are ways to dump salary without giving up valuable assets...so I doubt something like this would happen |

I wonder if you could see some kind of deal between Edmonton and Columbus. Involving RNH and the 4th for the 3rd, Hartnell and a pick next year.
If they think Tkachuk is not too far behind Puljujavi in terms of potential, would they do the 3rd and Clarkson for the 4th, just to dump that salary?
On the trade down side, could they draft Puljujavi at #3 and wait to see if one of the centers they like is available at #7? Then trading down with Phoenix for that pick and the 20th?
This is going to be a pretty exciting draft either way! |

Actually, this is not true. Tyutin will be a cap dump, and buying him out will create enough room for Jones. CBJ will get something for Hartnell-the trick will be if a team will be willng to just send a draft pick and not salary. The gap between the third pck and the fourth pick is huge. Columbus won't move it without a top center coming back. A collection of mediocre stuff won't get it done. Second round picks have less than a 50/50 shot of ever playing in the league-meaningless in a trade like this

IMO, that's a really bad deal for Calgary. Backlund has emerged as a solid 2/3 centre and has a reasonable salary. It mean Calgary taking an initial big step back and there's not guarantee the #3 is going to be a better player than who they get at 6. The 2nd and wotherspoon both could turn into good NHLers as well. I think Calgary should just take the BPA at 6 and not gut their already thin talent pool to move up 3 spots. |

Martin Hanzal and the 20th overall and another pick/prospect to the Jackets allowing Arizona to offer a package the 3rd, 7th, Dvorak and a prospect not named Strome, Domi, Duclair or OEL to Toronto for their boy Matthews. |

For all those who don't think Toronto would deal a stud center that they've so desperately needed.......they 100% will if they know they have the inside track on Stammer. Tampering charges are for idiots like Burkie who can't keep their egos bravado from the media as was the case when he was in T.O and publicized the fact he was headed to Sweden to woo the Sedins prior to free agency. Lou, Shanny, Stammer and his agent can keep their mouths shut no problem as the money involved would be well worth Stammer and his agents silence! |

The timing of this post was great...
15 minutes later the Hawks give up a valuable asset in order to dump a salary.

Yeah, not exactly apples to apples. But you did make a blanket statement.

Fair enough..I guess it all depends how loosely you want to use the term valuable asset. TT and the 3rd overall pick are two different animals in my opinion not to mention the difference in cap situations between teams |

Wait, so you're saying that Edmonton needs to use RNH as a sweetener to move up 1 spot from 4 to 3, and also take Hartnell's salary (and NMC) off their hands? You must place a lot of value in that pick next year you tossed in. Then, in the next breath, you say the 7th and 20th for the 3rd. Not a big RNH fan, are you?
No knock on Hartnell, I like the player, but his NMC is going to be an issue in the expansion draft to any team that might take him on, and he is likely to regress before this contract ends. They shouldn't have to pay another team to take him, but he also isn't likely to net much in return if they can move him. |

Im just throwing stuff out there and not speaking in absolutes. I think RNH is great and Columbus would covet him. Obviously the deal I was referring to would require Columbus to give back Edmonton more than just the 3rd and Hartnell. Maybe a D man or a 1st or 2nd next year.
I just imagine Puljujarvi playing alongside McDavid and dominating together. |

Agreed, aside from missteps in value etc, I was really hoping the oilers would land at 3.
Pulu's 2 way ability and position probably make him a better fit than laine or Matthews. And certainly Tkachuk
While torts is obviously looking to bolster the defence, not hinder it, i doubt the two teams could get a deal seeing as I'm sure the oilers would want a defender added. Plus, nuge adds salary to an already strapped team
But
Nuge and 4th
3rd and savard + salary (hartnell makes sense but that nmc makes him very tough to take on in an expansion year - --maybe Tyutin?)
Is a deal I'd certainly consider. |

But Tyutin has a NMC too, along with all of their contract problem-children, Hartnell, Clarkson, Foligno. Every one will be an issue to a team taking their contracts on prior to expansion. |
