As I wake up and think More about the trade...I get ready for the day and put my pants on....I realize there is simply no way Ron Hextall puts his on the same way as us
Interesting year for Philly drafts. 20 years ago Sixers take AI #1 and this year it's Simmons. 10 years ago, at 22, Flyers took some kid, center Claude Giroux. Now Flyers, at 22, take Rubstov.
Obviously 2 different kinds of players, but when I had read about this kid being on the Flyers' radar, I was hoping he'd be a possibility in the first round.
Now couple the fact they got a player they coveted plus got what is essentially a really late 1st rounder too, great job Hextall!

I don't know if this player will work out or not, but I absolutely love how Hextall went about things and didn't robotically go about his business. Love the thought process and like what I hear about the player.

Interesting parallel between Rubstov and Giroux....in reading the descriptions about Rubstov, I was thinking his game sounds like Captain Clode's a little.
I really didnt like the passing on Bellows or Gauthier. A few years back the Flyers took JVR 2nd overall, they could have got a kid not much different at 22 in Bellows. Don't get it at all.

This is why scouts are paid to watch these kids....no idea of how it will pan out but I remember the day they took Forsberg and all the ranking systems had him way down as a late first round talent or even a second round pick....kid turned out better then that......I would have liked Max Jones, but that's only based on a few watches on my part. I don't know much about the young Ruskie but am excited by what is being said.
I see some questioning the pick and mentioning the low offensive ceiling...this kid averaged almost a PPG in a low scoring league. He scored in tourney after tourney. I don't think offense is gonna be an issue for him.

Not even close to JVR's projectee upside at the time. They viewed his ceiling as almost Lindros-esque although likelihood of approaching it was always a bit iffy (esp in terms of lacking the mean streak. Bellows is regarded as a one-trick pony whose one trick is a spectacular shot.
Based on the mock drafts that I read leading up, Rubtsov was expected to be within the 22-23 spot anyway, so if he is who we wanted all along, it's a good trade.
My concerns are, if the Flyers feel like his stock in the draft dropped due to some kind of drug scandal, there is one red flag. Also I consider how we got Travis Konecny last year. Konecny I believe was expected to be a mid first round pick and his stocked dropped and we were allowed to pick him up later. I'm hoping when it comes to forwards that we're not getting into the habit of making the "I'm the smartest man in the room" pick but if you guys believe Konecny and Robtsov can be two dynamic players together, I'll take your words on it.
Also with Russian players, whether it be before their career starts, in the middle of their career or late in their career, they always want to go home. I don't want to paint all Russian born players with one brush but I worry about this for any team. I know Provorov is probably going to be brought up to counter my point but Provorov is already in and playing in North America.

I was hoping we would pick up a guy who is a pure scorer.

They'll have a shot with the 3 second rounders. Could end up with Adam Mascherin or Alex DeBrincat. Admittedly smaller guys, but they can absolutely light the lamp with consistency at the junior level.

Hard not to be impressed by that video clip.
The part where he seemed to singlehandedly dismantle Team USA was impressive.

Button had him 8 slots higher than he went. I tend to agree with Button's analysis. Also I'm a big proponent of the Hockey Prospects Black Book because it's numerous scouts and has tidbits from NHL scouts. They had Rubtsov at 16.
I would have been happy with Rubtsov at 18. Ecstatic to land him at 22 and swap 79 for 36.
I get being bummed about missing out on Bellows. I liked Bellows a ton. But the Flyers got themselves a really good kid here.
From how I understand it, where they were in the draft was as Bill describes it -- you're not getting a full cake, you're getting the mixing bowl and some ingredients, not all. Which, when you think about it, is rational: They were picking 18th originally, and the only draft that deep I have ever seen was 2003
So what do you do? Lock in on one guy at 18 who has strengths and flaws, or deal down, acquire some assets, and take another guy with strengths and flaws?
Because drafting 18-year-olds for a men's league is hard to do, I don't base how good a GM is on if any given pick makes it or not. I base how good a GM is on his understanding of process, ability to take advantage of opportunities to acquire assets, and above all, knowing when to act.
Dealing down last night doesn't make Hextall a good GM. Understanding WHY you move down is what makes him a good GM, because with where they were, no player is bulletproof. So you take a deal that gives you an extra lottery ticket in a pretty good spot and you try to hit on that one, too

Yep. Like what I hear about the player and most of all, I like how they went about dropping back without leaving themselves exposed (they had a Plan B), and got a player they really liked, while acquiring a higher pick.
