All in all, the best we could do with the draft picks we had. I don't mind a trade not happening at the draft, their will be plenty of opportunity as FA are costly this year, ie Yandle. We have to be willing to accept less to get rid of the big contracts. I'm hoping Nash and Staal for draft picks and young prospects. We don't need NHL ready players this year, we just need chemistry. Brassard, Zucs, Miller, Kreider, Stepan, Girardi, Klein, McDonough provide an amazing base, Fast, Hayes, Stalberg, McIlrath, even Lindberg create a great second generation. Add buchnevich, Skjei, Holden, Diaz this year and all we need is a three young guns to fill in the fowards. We should be able to get them and draft picks for Staal and Nash. We could even retain salary if needed. |

Thanks for the recap Jan.
I realize you can't judge any of these players really for another 2 years. Although I feel a little more positive about it, the reason I didn't like the Day pick was because he is another big guy that doesn't use or at least is not known to use his size. There is a lack of competitive snarl on this team currently. Whether be the players or the coaching staff, I'm just getting concerned that it continues. Who knows maybe they get it back with a fresh start and having more time to physically and mentally rest this summer.
As much as I think this team needs a shot in the arm and another top line scorer. I just have a feeling they sign all 4 RFAs, Stalberg, and another 3rd/4th liner. Not sure what they do with the leftover but I really have a feeling they stand pat this year.

After all the talk Gorton and AV did of "needing new blood" I think we are in store for a few changes |

I really don't have anything negative to say about the Rangers draft, although it's a amazing that an organization with a coach who is completely stringent on lefty/righty pairings on defense continues to ignore taking right handed defensemen in the draft, especially after choosing not to sign 2014 pick Ryan Mantha and drafting lefty Sergey Zborovskiy last year.
I haven't checked the comments that you guys made during and since the draft and you have probably brought this up.

IMO, when you are drafting in the third round and lower, you just have to draft for potential using a best player available philosophy. It's hard to draft for need at that point in the draft when the 3rd-4th rounders aren't really expected to make the NHL team for 3-4 years or so. You never know what the team composition will look like at that point or even whether or not the coach will still be around (in fact, I think it is unlikely that he will be given the life cycle of coaches).
I like the Day pick because he is an elite skater with excellent measurable. He has 1st pair potential talent. The question with him is whether he is committed and coachable -- i.e., million dollar talent and 10 cent brain. But in the third round you have to take that chance.
The Rangers do very well in the third round, and I think they did very well there this year.

When I played Be a GM mode in NHL 14, whenever I got up to the 2016 NHL draft, Day was always the 1st overall pick and developed into a 94. |

Can we get some insight in 2017 then? This seems way too easy, cant believe nobody else is using this trick. We will RULE the NHL forever!!!! |

Yeah it is certainly a risk worth taking...surely the other teams will be kicking themselves if he reaches his potential. But in a lot of ways...hes the dude that peaked in high school.
With less draft picks...I'm not sure I would've tried it on him, but again its a round where so many guys amount to nothing anyway.

Rangers did very well for the dearth of picks they had this year.
I especially like the Day and Ronning picks. |

I totally understand your point, but like you said, so many guys in the third round amount to nothing. I think once you get past the second round, I am all for throwing caution to the wind, and swinging for the fences with draft picks.
I also think that we don't have the ability to really evaluate third-seventh round picks as fans. Those are really scouting department type picks, and you have to just trust the organizations' scouts to pick who they like and who they thing has some upside.
I mean let's be honest, not many of us know the potential of a fourth round draft pick from Finland. Not directing this at you, just in general. |
