I recently started collecting hockeycards

I have the Tims 16-17 base set plus a few of the platinum profile, local leader, franchise force.I also am about 10-15 cards shy of the 2016-17 Upper Deck base set, with a few young guns(very few)Morrissey,Sanford,(Whoopee).I have a 7-8 pack box of O Pee Chee here with a couple allstars and rookies,so overall i dont have alot or anything of huge value.

I would like to get into more and need a little advice on maybe where i should be buying my cards,boxes,ind.packs.I did read your article about buying boxes on EBAY#1: Beware the "Factory Sealed Box"!., and i would probably fall for that, not knowing any difference, not ever getting any Rookies or anything worth anything.I dont mind spending the cash to a certain degree.

I guess i'm asking where do i buy my cards? Hobby shops,Walmart,Toys R US,Convenience stores?Thanks in advance.

If you don't mind the drive, there's Clouts n Chara in ON which is one of the biggest dealers around. I've never seen so much high end in one place, although they have a bit of everything (maybe not Victory, but base Upper Deck for sure). If you wanna go online, check out dacardworld.com as well. Anyway, glad to hear someone new getting into the hobby.

And by the way, my #1 favoite vintage set (besides 51/52 Parkhurst) is 71/72 OPC. Cool look and some big hits, plus the Topps has the Mr. Hockey Retires card.

I can, and was planning on very shortly, addressing this very question! I have something to post that may be helpful in this respect too. Be on the lookout!

Awesome stuff!

I have a fairly large hockey card and memorabilia collection as well. I do have a pretty cool hockey card set as well as a signed jersey that may very well be a one of one from a very popular player now in the NHL that would love to share as well!

Look forward to following this all year! Cheers!

inherited a lot of cards a year ago (full sets from 70s-90s, rookies, promos) and I was looking to unload a bunch but it seems to be a weak market.

eBay has done a fairly nice job of killing the market. I mean, Upper Deck did their best to kill in starting in about 1997, but eBay is doing their best. There are 3 things that sell well:

1) Game-Used, autographed, serial numbered cards of the top-10 hottest rookies at the moment. Most game-used pieces and non-star autos sell for about a dollar or less. Wait 3 months and most hot cards will deflate in value.

2) Upper Deck Young Guns and SP Authentic Future Watch autos from about 2000-present

3) Cards from 86/87 and earlier (excluding the mid-late 70s). 89/90 was when stuff started to REALLY be mass-produced, but even the 87/88 and 88/89 stuff is relatively cheap. What you really want is stuff from the 50s, but stuff from the 60s/early 70s/early 80s still has some nice value.
