Maybe it's just me, but I figure that Vegas would be the perfect situation for Ottawa to free themselves from Bobby Ryan's contract. He's an American who has been an elite scorer in the past and is in the midst of a (so far) successful playoff run. If there's any team that could take on a larger cap hit with that kind of term, it would be a new franchise that will be looking to find stars through any means necessary.

If McPhee is smart, he might even be able to extort a pick or prospect out of Ottawa by promising to take him.

Can the Rangers interest you in a slightly used Nick Holden or a heavily used Marc Staal?

The Rangers will get Staal and Girardi to waive their NMCs, because neither will get picked. Also, the Rangers don't have a deep enough system to compensate Vegas with.

ryan probably has the worst contract in the league. stay away, for the draft.

going to cost a lot for ottawa to move that contract.

If they could pull a 1st and a solid prospect, I'd say it's worth it. Ryan having the modified NTC and NMC makes it tougher to go through the expansion draft, but maybe he'd accept a trade which would open the door to retaining some salary.

Yeah it's a bad contract, but he's been known to produce in ebbs and flows and would represent a good marketing opportunity for their team. Aside from their top pick, who would be easier to market as a star than American ex-2nd overall pick and Olympic silver medal-winning Bobby Ryan?

I feel like the mock drafts are futile since there were probably be plenty of deals going on with Vegas and teams with players they don't want to lose.

As the team is positioned now (which is the stipulation for any expansion draft simulation), they won't have much of a choice. Bieksa's NMC with Lindholm and Vatanen along with more than 4 forwards worthy of protection make him the likely player to be exposed.

I have no doubt they'll convince Bieksa to waive his NMC and that concern will be eliminated, but Ed said himself that he was basing "(t)his mock draft is based on how things are today". You can't assume everything that teams WANT to do will happen.

And that's a fair question to ask based off the parameters.

I think Pittsburgh plays the odds that LV, would rather have Jimmy Howard than MAF (who will waive). For cap purposes, LV can't have both.

Playing the long game. Bieksa waives, he knows he won't get picked anyway. Its good for the Ducks if he does, and makes him look like a team player.

I love the emphasis on May vs Must, that is super important. Some teams will need to sign players at all positions just to make the minimum requirements for exposure. Also, let's not forget that RFAs are eligable to be picked even though they dont have contracts. Also, players who don't qualify for 40/70 "musts" may be picked if they aren't "exempt" (ie: Eric Gelinas does not satisfy the MUST component because he didn't play enough games, but he MAY be picked)

I think it's imperative that you show who gets protected and who gets exposed when you make a list like this. You made a bunch of assumptions about players waiving NMCs and you fail to provide any evidence to support your claims.

If this is based on how it stands today:
Silfverberg is claimed,
Murray is claimed,
Arizona goalie gets taken,
(frank) Matt Stajan - they'll take a 22 year old prospect instead,
they would be doing Edmonton a major favor by taking Pouliot,
Greg Pateryn over Esa Lindell, Steven Johns and Dan Hamhuis - I dont think so.
They don't need 5 goalies and Detroit has a dicey situation with Ryan Sproul

It's all speculation and opinions, at least try to be as transparent as possible rather than picking a fkn name out of a hat.

Or they protect 7 forwards instead of 4 D as they have a number of NHL-capable young Dmen that don't need protecting (Theodore, Montour and Larsson) and could step in to replace anyone taken.

As far as Dallas, they would be protecting Lindell along with Klingberg and Johns on D then 7 forwards due to the depth they have in their forward ranks. I could see the argument for Hamhuis but as his game has dropped off, I can also see the argument for picking RHD when available.

Fleury waiving his clause is still a mystery, but the Pens will figure out a way to move him if he doesn't. He's certainly making himself more attractive right now.

I totally agree with Cammalleri being someone the Devils would leave exposed and wouldn't be an awful pick by Vegas as he can put up numbers when he's healthy....but not a guarantee.

My one question was whether you picked him as you figured Devils would go 7-3-1 and leave him out of top 7 (which is hard...as it is hard to find 7 worthwhile) or 4-4-1 where the obvious keepers are Hall, Henrique, Zajac, Palms...and then have 4 defensive spots where it was Greene and Severson for sure...and then 2 possible spots where they acquire guys pre-draft?
