Good read, good idea.

Is the grade based on the value of the asset(s) acquired, or based on how good McPhee's choice was compared to what else he could have chosen?

Thanks! More the latter. For example, Pulkkinen is probably not even a C asset, but McPhee didn't have a lot of better choices. Engelland isn't a F asset, but using an expansion pick on a UFA is usually not optimal.

I think he got best value from CBus - Wild Bill is a solid center / also Miller from Bos & Shea from Ducks are solid building blocks - should have gotten more from Carolina & Flames -

Fun article - well done -

Thanks!

Regarding Carolina, I assume you're talking about getting more for TVR and Kruger? But what more could they have got? TVR isn't worth a 1st. And while Kruger the player is worth more than a 5th, the market for him was soft because of his contract. I suppose they could've held Kruger until the Deadline, there's a chance that somebody would've paid maybe up to a 3rd for him then.

I think Theodore was a massive coup for VGK. I think the ducks backed themselves into a hole more than they needed to, but Theodore is quite a prize to come out of an expansion draft.

I think he is one of the very best assets the VGK came away with

Good article, bud. Nice to see some actual research and unbiased analysis

I was confused by many (most?) of McPhee's decisions, and you've done a good job at highlighting them. With Anaheim - why not just take Manson or Vatanen?? Why accept Theodore, a guy who's projected ceiling is well below these two, AND take on a terrible contract in Stoner??

And why not take a flyer on Shinkaruk??

I think the entire deal with Carolina was:

CAR: Keeping Stem, & Nordy + TVR + Kruger & a 7th round pick.

For
VGK: 2 - 5th round picks, & a 2nd round pick + Connor Brickley

I think this was work out before the Expansion draft with Carolina, Chicago, & VGK.

Chicago agrees to it since they get cap relief, and agreed to pay Kruger his bonus on July 1st...which meant the entire trade could not be completed until after that happened.

Blackhawks care about cap $, Canes & VGK care about real $.

nice read and analysis. I believe Theodore is ranked as a top 25 prospect... great haul for an expansion team. don't forget that if ana had not been able to cut a deal with vegas they likely would have traded one or two of their d anyway to not lose them for nothing meaning vegas wouldn't have gotten vatanen anyway.

yeah the situation was definitely not a stick up where they just came away with the wrong prize. it had to have been discussed and a deal in place for a while

Thank you!

As for Theodore, I believe his ceiling is still generally considered to be higher than Manson and Vatanen's. A couple years ago, no way Anaheim parts with him.

Yea, I don't get Shinkaruk. Take a look at him during camp, then waive him if he still remains deficient. You'd still have Engelland, I guess -- I don't think people would've been banging down his door if he had hit the open market.

But again, it tells you how much Shinkaruk's shine has dimmed.

But question is, are you wearing them at night? Is the future so bright?

because if a deal wasnt worked out ana would have traded them away for assets to not lose them for nothing. it may look on paper like taking them was an option but it never was.
