There is very little room for "youngens" and that would mean one of the young vets would be sent packing....
It is doubtful the two meatnpotatoes forwards Bouma & Wingels....they signed are leaving...the centre Dauphin can be shipped to Rockford w/o a wavier claim being called on him. Hayden too.
Jurco they would possibly lose if a team thinks he is worthy of a claim if he flops in the Windy City.

Happy Labor Day weekend all...
thanks for the updates JJ. We're just over a month away now from Puck drop. Cant' wait...certainly interested to see how the Hossa LTIR plays out as well as the new ads to the team.
On a somber note a sad bit of news today - Walter Becker from Steely Dan gone at 67...

If he flops would that be a bad thing? Easy way to get rid of him seems to me, what with them having to include another guy when they want to or have to get rid of someone. |

Agreed!
But I just keep think back to the junior days...maybe he thought the NHL was just gonna be as easy as riding a bike, but he didn't know the ride seem s downhill and really fast if you aren't prepared for the pace.

Fortin is the main draw in my opinion, Debrincat has a ways to go still. There is 1 LW position available for Fortin to grab if he can bring what he did last camp. The rest are all going to Rockford or back to juniors.... |

With as many touches and the way Bowman has set up the Swedish and European prospect review throughout their respective season, I am guessing this investment in a highly inordinate amount of Swedish & Euro prospects (compared to the other NHL teams) points to one conclusion: filling in your roster with cheap rookie talent makes the top end veteran players more "affordable" while those rookies need to play well at least a couple years to justify a larger contract. This is forward thinking. However, i feel it is more likely a forward or two breaks into the rotation (I am thinking more Mr Fortin) than most of those dman prospects. Kempny., Forsling, Ruuta represent players already here or just signed [Ruuta]; they will get more attention and have more pro experience.
For the first time in many years the Blackhawks appear to have everything in place to aid the development and scouting of the younger prospects- and that is exciting because there is a lot of talented prospets in the system. We are more familiar with the Krys, Carlsson, Snuggerud but there are others whom might be taking another step in development. Just to name one: Puollo (sic). And the encouraging news is that not only the touches made during season, but now if this talent line begins to ripen and pass through Rockford, there is better coaching in place at the AHL and even in Chicago the assistant coaches is improved. |

A part of me hope he pulls a Panik and finally turns it up a notch this season but another part of me isn't holding my breath, but it really would be nice if Jurco did elevate his game finally. That goal video reel from his rookie year shows his ability to score in the dirty areas around the goalie and (if paired with the right linemates) become a 20/15 or 20/20 forward. He could help solve the LW issue, something like:
Jurco - Anisimov - Kane
Sharp - Schmaltz - Hartman
(with Jurco and Sharp flip-flopping if needed)
Either way, if no rookie supremely impresses in training camp to take the LW opening (i.e. Fortin or DeBrincat), then Jurco and Tootoo seem to be defaulted as making the team to start the season (the latter as the 13th forward).
Dauphin will make a case for himself and could be in the starting lineup, i.e. challenging Kero for 4C. |

Who is Puollo? The closest prospect I can think of is Finnish d-man Joni Tuulola. |

My money is on Press and Snuggerud as prospect tourney standouts on D. Not necessarily as making strong cases to make the Hawks out of training camp but at least to give the coaches a glimpse of blueliners who may be worth a call up later in the season after some more experience in Rockford.
As for forwards, my guess as to standouts at forward are Fortin, Highmore, and Bondra with a sleeper pick in Caron. |

Anyone thinking there are any legit NHL prospects on that list that are anything more than bottom six forwards or bottom pair D guys at least a couple of years from now is engaged in a lot of wishful thinking.
After years of low tier draft picks we shouldnt expect anything more.

Detroit has to take some blame - mostly Blashill. If Babcock had continued to be his coach into his 3rd year (only his 2nd full one), Jurco may have continued to develop properly. Babcock seemed to have a plan of taking a pretty decent offensive guy and slowly playing him in more defensive role - kind of like how Q does with some kids, he did with Teravainen and even Schmaltz a little. Then Blashill took over with his terrible system (of which there were rumors that guys like Datsyuk disliked) and seemed to not care about certain guys (Sheahan took a step back too under Blashill).
Lots of things can stunt a player and bad coaching decisions can be one of them. Idk if that's totally it when it comes to Jurco, but it feels like it played a role. Now we just have to wait and see if Jurco can come back from that and be effective again - Rundblad never could, but Panik seems to be getting over his fall from grace in other orgs just fine. |

Sheehan would be a great buy-low depth Center option for the Hawks.

It probably depends on how Detroit sees their center situation. Zetterberg-Nielsen are locks, Larkin finished the season at center mostly (though Blashill seemed reluctant at times with him as a pivot). You'd also think they'd prefer not to sell low on Sheahan and bank on the fact that he won't shoot at below 2% again after being 10% or higher his other 3 seasons. |

Talent, size, hands, skill, skating, play in the opposing crease are not really questioned. You could even see that last yr with the Hawks but IMO the kid didn't understand his positioning. In open ice you could see he was hesitant/confused.
Besides playing in the WJC U-18 and U-20 tournaments and 2 WC tournaments for Slovakia, shows his talent all the way back to 17 yrs old, I like, and was surprised, he was a +34, +46 and +46 in his 3yrs in the QMJHL (makes me think he may have what it takes to be effective on a 3rd line).
Give the kid a full camp, coach him up to a defined role and see what you've got. Talent, size and skating are not the issue. |

Coyotes extend Duclair at 1.2 million for 1 year.
He is someone I thought might be good for the Hawks speed/youth/cost movement. Hawks could have offer-sheeted him 1.5 and only parted with a 3rd rounder.
I know he is not big, and coming off a terrible year....but he has speed....some skill....and is just 22 years old. Oh, and he has played LW.
Oh well, just thought it was a low-risk kinda signing that would have been in the line of the Hawk moves this summer. And, another LW option for lines 2 or 3.
Thinking Stan must have some things already in the works for early October when the Hossa money frees up. Hope so anyway....

Ya. Would love Bondra and Dahlstrom to improve their game enough to become useful NHLers. Dahlstrom would be a great 5-6 D-man if he could just improve some. Love the size of both guys. One extra massive body on the wing, and another on the "D" would be such a welcome treat. Yet, both have underwhelmed so far, and both need to make the move soon (at 20 and 22) or they will be career minor-leaguers. Likely that is what they both are, but would love to see them take a huge step forward in this tourny and show some potential of moving to the next level!!!
