What's up with the team's powerplay?

Is it purely lack of skill because for the longest time the PP was a strength. For the last 3+ seasons this franchise seems have forgotten how to play it.

Dude...don't go trying to change the 'draftists' mind..they just don't get it.

ANA won the cup in 2007 with only 4 players actually drafted by the Ducks...

- LordHumungous

That's but one example of winning, that is not the norm as you would have everyone believe

As a general rule of thumb you don't win without drafting your core, even Anaheim drafted Getzlaf and Perry when they won it in 2007, Getzlaf was their leading scorer in the playoffs that year and Perry was tied for second.

A lot of things went right for them that year, Scott Neidermayer wanted to play with his brother and Burkie took Lowe to the cleaners trading for Pronger.

I'd say it is better to stay competitive and pass a winning tradition down to the next generation instead of purposefully losing in hopes of lucking into a McD or Crosby at the draft.
- Robio

They're not staying competitive though, most middling teams aren't. So how do you pass down a winning tradition when you're losing and not making the playoffs?

Also...you don't need a generational talent to win, both Los Angeles and Chicago won five Cups without a generational talent like Crosby or McDavid. Toews and Kane are not generational talents, neither is Crawford or Keith or Seabrook but they won three Cups with that core.

LA won with Kopitar, which was luck in the 2005 draft, and Doughty and Quick, and Voynov and Martinez and a number of depth players they drafted. But they were not competitive, that's a fallacy.

Detroit is the ONLY team that remained competitive for two decades because of drafting several players that no one else drafted. Well the Zetterberg and Datsyuk run is over and they're no longer competitive.

But you still have two very smart, skilled guys on your team that should be able to come up with some suggestions of their own. Hell, the twins were there during the heyday.

Now that makes sense. I'm assuming you are a believer that PP success is driven from the back-end.

I'd say break up the Sedins for the PP. Daniel has become much less aggressive, and both him and Henrik are look more pass. It'll force Henrik to find other players, and then PP2 can have a great passer on it as well.

Hank, Vanek, BB, Edler, Baer

Bo, LE, Ganger, Hutton, Daniel

Or whoever... just based off what they have going so far this year.

I just want the kid to succeed or fail. Nothing in between so a concrete decision can be made on development direction and our own questions as fans can be answered.

There's zero failure in drafting at the top of the draft for a few years, nothing bad can come of it unless you totally pooch the pick, which is extremely uncommon...unless you're Kevin Lowe

Even drafting 5th overall could/could have brought us some great young players. Pettersson and Juolevi are great building blocks! Ehlers, Pettersson and Tkachuk would have been better, but that's what happens when you have an idiot for a GM

It will be interesting to see how Det rebounds from its one down year as that will provide evidence for the "culture" theory.

The thing about middling teams is so many were so close with a few radical outliers. Parity has been reached with 18 teams over 90 points and 23 over 80. Having strong parity will allow teams to build without having to be awful for long stretches (as I feel we are doing)

Philly finished 19th and got the 2nd overall pick. What amazing luck. Maybe being middling will afford us the same luck while trying to maintain a winning culture. Best of all worlds...
