They need to focus hard on not making playoffs and improving their draft lottery odds. Tanking is hard. |

I would like to feel for these fellas. I just can't. Was in the Army for 34 yrs. We were posted routinely - and had absolutely Zero choice of where we went. No extra pay, if it was off regular posting season a good chance your family was staying behind. Some postings you could not even take your family. So no - human perspective or not - i am sure the extra pay would take a little bit of a sting out. |

Yeah, why would I feel bad? These guys are getting PAID. Consultants travel Mon-Thurs every week and don't see their family while making a 1/20 of these athletes pay.

Bob Duff: The Human Element of the Trade Deadline
Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill monitors players who hear their names in trade talk to ensure that they are not being affected mentally by the stress. - BobDuff
Couldn't care less about the human side. If it hurts your feelings to be traded, just remember you are making $$$$ and someone else still wants you. It's a business. |

It's a life these professionals choose, it's not thrust upon them without options. Yes, it would be hard to keep hearing your name being mentioned to go to the Islanders but think of it this way. If you are a police officer, fireman, emergency worker, or even tradepeople like electricians those people may not get home alive, & they aren't paid 800k or millions. This sounds like a beat up to me, trying to throw shade on 'other' things......I wonder that could be??? |

These off-day reports are agonizing.
Step one:
BEAT WRITER: "Shoot, there are no games until Saturday and there's no real news to report on. What can I write about? Should I maybe do some independent analysis and opinion? No, I am too uncreative and intellectually lazy for that. I know! I'll write a human interest story about some irrelevant and tangential side topic. But I'll need to get some quotes for legitimacy."
Step two:
BEAT WRITER: Asks selected players and coaches leading questions about irrelevant and tangential side topic.
Step three:
PLAYERS / COACHES: Provide completely predictable and thoroughly boring responses to leading questions about irrelevant and tangential side topic.
Step four:
BEAT WRITER: Writes uninteresting story that probably could have easily been written in exactly the same way by anyone at any time, but because there are recent quotes from current players it counts as "reporting."
Lather, rinse, repeat. |

Today's depressing Red Wings fact of the day, brought to you by Sven:
Tonight's projected third line based on the morning skate is Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm, and Frans Nielsen. The three of them combined have $48.5 million remaining on their contracts beyond this season. |

I don't feel bad for them one bit. They chose this profession knowing how it works and are getting paid, at minimum, hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to play a game.
Their families, on the other hand, I do feel bad for. |
