Carol Schram: Pettersson gets first hat trick, Demko is coming, Utunen eliminates Canada
Elias Pettersson tallied his first career hat trick as the Vancouver Canucks started the Eastern Canadian portion of their World Juniors road trip with an overtime win over Ottawa. Plus, Thatcher Demko's call-up is imminent as Mike McKenna is placed on waivers and Canucks prospect Toni Utunen is the unlikely hero for Finland as Team Canada is eliminated from the World Junior Championship in the quarterfinal. |

Thanks Carol, and happy new year!
With the Goldobin talk, I was similarly reminded of Baertschi. It doesn't feel like too long ago that the same criticisms Goldobin is facing (soft, poor defense, and benefiting from a good young center) were being said of Sven. Here's to hoping Goldobin figures it out as well, as his production ceiling seems to be considerably higher than Baertschi's |

There were a couple people pushing that nonsense but he was never even close to lazy on D. Awareness needed to sharpen is all. Goldy... standing there chewing on his cud waiting for someone to get the puck and give it to him...

Would you guys do Edler and Goldy for Kappy off of the Leafs? Maybe we need to take some salary off them to fit it but I feel that is a trade they would make. They get solid D and a young player with offensive upside and trade a kid who they can't afford to pay. Works for both teams... but has the potential to be home run for the Canucks. |

I don't think its a lack of effort for Goldy. Its a lack of IQ and being able to do the math as it happens defensively.
Its just weird that this team's collective defensive inabilities seem to projected entirely onto Goldobin as if his aura is making everyone else also bad. |

Canucks don't have to make moves like that . Unless it is something that blows your socks off , no need.

I don't know if people just took the story and ran with it, but I recall some pieces written about Baertschi needing similar time in the pressbox to watch and reset his game (whether that means effort/awareness/etc only ol' Willie knows for sure). I definitely agree his awareness needs to sharpen and think it'll come the more he gains NHL experience. I also approve the use of these motivational tactics for players and don't see it as a bad thing, particularly for guys under 150 games played |

Agreed. Not saying the deal is lopsided, but I think it greatly benefits Toronto more than Vancouver. I think a solo Edler deal would bring a return that better caters to the plan going forward
Also, for what its worth on Goldobin, loudly proclaiming you scratched a young player and dedicated a whole practice for him to learn is hardly selling high on the kid |

I'm not sure what you are talking about? I called him lazy and going over video, you can see endless examples. Did you hear Green yesterday? He covered ir tactfully and I agree.
I said absolutely nothing about our D problems being his fault in fact the Canucks were the stingiest team in the league in December so that makes no sense.
So you wouldnt rather see Kappy in our top 6 instead of Goldy? I can only assume I guess.

In which manner?
Kappy in our top 6 is a better fit than Goldy and he's in the same age group. Edler is a UFA.

I like Kapanen a lot so I would do that, assuming Edler's trade value is a late 1st + random prospect. Kapanen is the type of player you hope to draft with that late 1st anyway.
Travis Green would probably hate that trade though, he's been using Edler as a workhorse #1 dman ever since he came back from injury, he's averaged like 24.5 minutes a game in December.
Trade would hurt the Canucks this year for sure, but pay off in the long run. |

You could get two Kappys and a second for Edler. Toronto can't afford Kappy next year why not wait.
Until Edler agrees to waive and Canucks agree to part ways I think it is nothing more than water cooler talk.
