Carol Schram: NCAA signing Brogan Rafferty debuts on D as the Canucks visit the Predators With two games left in the 2018-19 regular season, the Vancouver Canucks will introduce another new player into their lineup as college free-agent defenseman Brogan Rafferty gets set to make his NHL debut on Thursday against the Nashville Predators.

This excitement, momentum and confidence will carry over to the off-season training, ticket sales and next season. It shows character that these guys still want to win.

I believe that the Canucks and Wings will both be much improved next season.

I mean, considering how Stecher/Boeser/Gaudette/Madden/Demko have turned out I'm pretty happy with their NCAA scouting. I don't expect all three, but you have to think at least one of them might carve a decent NHL career out. To me, getting something for nothing is always good. If we get a top5 pick, I will be jerking off on this message board for 4 months.

Stecher was the only player that was scouted out of the NCAA, the rest were drafted out of the USHL (I believe).

Elliot + Teves + Rafferty aren't going to be any type of solution to how void we are of talent on the backend. Benning plucking a few undrafted UFA defenseman shows his willingness to address a glaring issue, but shouldn't be considered any sort of solution. These kids may or may not pan out, but we are talking years down the road, after significant stints in the AHL (i imagine).
