Not a bad return for a UFA. I would have l liked to see this trade happen in a few days to see how Kreider plays out as if he resigns with NYR I think the Kings could have gotten more. Their system is so deep that adding to it isn't the worst thing in the world, makes the poopty season a little more palpable!

It doesn't really matter what happens with Kreider. They weren't going to get a better prospect than Madden. Madden and a 2nd was a huge overpay that no one else was going to match.

It seems to me like a pretty good return.
The 2nd will be in the middle of the round if the Canucks miss the playoffs or are a 1st round exit. The other major suitor for Toffoli was Boston, who is leading the league in points and is a good bet to go further in the playoffs, making their 2nd likely nearer the end of the round. At the moment, you'd much rather have Vancouver's 2nd than Boston's 2nd.
Madden sounds like a pretty good prospect. From what I'm reading, he's a great skater, has high hockey IQ and even has a little feistiness. He's one of the leading scorers in the NCAA this season. His main knock is that he's skinny and needs to add a lot of muscle, but that's a whole lot easier to do than improving your game or your IQ. It sounds like his chances of being an NHLer (probably as a middle 6er) are pretty decent and being the son of an NHL champion (John Madden) probably helps.
Here are a few articles on Madden from a couple of months ago that I found on another board:
https://dailyhive.com/van...r-madden-canucks-prospect
https://www.vancourier.co...h-northeastern-1.24027544
https://dobberprospects.com/player/tyler-madden/
Schaller is just a warm body and a cap dump. He's a 29-year-old who typically scores in single digits, presumably on the 4th line. |

Nice trade LA. |

Reading a lot of positives things about Madden - very cool. Combine that with the picks and some center depth (though I’m not expecting much) and it seems like Blake made the right call. |

That he's John Madden's son makes it all the better. Madden was a nightmare to play against, although when he went to your Panthers, he was in the twilight of his career. |

Not a shock that Oilers and Flames fans are loving this deal for LA
But, it is a good deal for LA. Can't disagree. Jimbo don't care about 2nd rd picks
Madden is a good prospect, but with Pettersson, Horvat and Gaudette as your top 3C, Madden was gonna be expendable. Lind, Hoglander, Podkolzin gives them depth at W.
For a team (Canucks) that hasn't exactly loaded up with picks during this rebuild, they have a pretty good prospect pool. Horvat with 2/3 of That 70s line should be a nice improvement. Given the division playoff format its possible the Canucks can make a decent run here. Of course, just as easy be done 1st round (gotta make playoffs first).
I think both teams are satisfied with this trade. |

Canucks looking to make a push here. Get some depth to make noise in the playoffs. When Boeser is back, one of them will be on the third line. Hopefully Boeser only comes back at 100%. |

John always had grit - played solid for the Hawks, too
Had no clue Tyler was his son. That’s awesome. Excited to see what he can do for the Kings.

We will see if he amounts to anything many years down the road. He will need some seasoning in the AHL and about 40 pounds after he is done in the NCAA |

I mean I'm not saying they would have gotten a 1st but to me and I'm just an idiot fan if Kreider resigns Toffoli to me is the clear cut rental to go for and we all know how desperate teams are at the deadline!

Madden and a second is better than a first and whatever prospect someone else was willing to give up. Blake found the desperate GM willing to overpay. If he waited, Vancouver probably gets someone else.
Madden is really good and almost guaranteed to be a full-time NHLer. |

I mean I have no inside sources but there are so many teams on the bubble in the east and west that the lack of goal scorers basically Kreider and Toffoli I think creates a very enticing scenario to milk someone dry. Not complaining as I'm a rarity in Los Angeles as outside of the Kuemper trade I'm a fan of what Blake is doing!

Blake milked as much as he can milk. No one is desperate enough to give up a first and an A prospect for Toffoli.
It was too good an offer to turn down. |

I've learned never say never when it comes to either a team looking to get or in some cases stay in the hunt. Trust me the Kings have been on the other end of trading elite prospects to get over the hump and it usually didn't pan out outside of 2012 and 2014.

The Sekera trade off the top of my head. Now maybe I should say 1st rd picks which admittedly is a crap shoot but I'd love to see the Kings prospect pool if that trade never goes down as we'd have a 1st and a defensive prospect in the system. Now maybe neither one pans out but Sekera played 12 games for us and then didn't resign.

Yep, small young guys from the NCAA like Johnny Gaudreau never amount to anything until they bulk up and play a season or 2 in the AHL. |

I think this is a good trade for both sides.
Tyler Madden is on a very similar development path as Adam Gaudette. Same team, very similar ppg per draft season, not as strong of line mates as Gaudette. For a team re-building, that's a very nice pickup.
If Vancouver isn't able to re-sign Toffoli, than LA makes out like Bandits in this trade IMO. 2nd and a good prospect for a rental is a very nice haul if that is the case. If Toffoli re-signs, than I think its a very even trade given where both franchises are at. |

Yep... Always a challenge with pending FA's. And its whether the Canucks see the value in matching a big offer.
Who's Toffoli play with on your roster? |

immediately with Pearson and Horvat on our 2nd line. Louie Erickson and a slew of other bottom 6 players have rotated on that line all year and just hasn't been working.
Assuming the top line of Petey - Miller - Boeser
2nd would consist of Pearson - Horvat - Toffoli.
The Canucks haven't had a legit top 6 since 2011 so to me, the trade makes sense as long as they can re-sign him. |

If that's your baseline for the Kings getting bent over at the trade deadline, I don't see how you can be worried the Kings didn't get enough. There's a very good chance that the Kings got a better return for Toffoli than the Rangers will get for Kreider. Madden is basically in the tier of the best prospect teams are actually willing to part with. If he was a little bit better or fit the team slightly more, he would be untouchable.
