How are they going to afford that and sign all their RFAs and open spots?

Predicting a signing in December when its June is a stretch to say the least. For the right price and term this would be a good move for the organization and allow us to trade a significant piece for help on RW and or blue chip prospects.

I have to think that both Brodie and Hamonic will want raises, right? It may make sense to trade one of their rights, but obviously that depends on what Hall's contract will look like. They may be able to get away with letting a dman walk and moving a bottom six guy.

I'm sure Brodie will be looking for at least $6M and depending on both the cap situation and FA situation, he can likely get that if not more. So let's say he can command $7M. Would you rather spend that on Brodie or Hall?

Edmonton is not out of the race, Hall has unfinished business in Edmonton. Holland will get it done.

Cant see any team offering 6-7 years at 8-10 mm post Covid 19. The cap will be flat if not reducing for a couple years at least and UFA's are going to take the hit.

There will be a lot of major players for him, but I don't think NJ would be one of them. I imagine Gaudreau would want to go a team that can afford him while still being a current contender. NJ is definitely on the path to becoming a strong team, but they're still a few years off.

EDIT: Scratch that. I assumed he had some kind of trade clause.

If I remember correctly, there was considerable disappointment by him when he was traded. He seemed pretty stunned. I know Chiarelli is gone, but will he want to return?

If the Flames would sign Hall JG would likely be available to the highest bidder.
The Flames wouldn't sign Hall to be a 3rd line LW behind JG and Chucky.

Any team that gives up much for JG will regret it. The second this contract is up he is returning to Philadelphia....

Hamonic is likely gone as FA and I think Brodie will likely command 5.5aavx5. He’s a good D but is also coming off career low production and is on the wrong side of 30. I would say 6 is his free agent value but I could see him taking a small discount to stay.

I’m fine if we bring him in but I do have concerns about his injury history and off-ice history that dates back to his Windsor days.

For that reason I would rather see us target lehner if we can open up cap but I don’t run the team so we’ll see.

I think it's so hard to even begin gauging what this market looks like, so you could totally be right. I could also see a lot of players taking one or two year bridge deals, so they can take advantage once things go back to normal.

That said, if Hamonic is gone, that frees up just under $4M. You could probably move Bennett to make up the difference. I think it would be a huge mistake to move Johnny Hockey after one off-year.

There's no way Brodie is getting anywhere close to seven. He's got basically the same strengths and weaknesses as Gardiner.

Maybe someone gives Brodie 20 million over 4, but anyone commiting more than that should fire their GM the next day.

The reason for moving JG this off-season is primarily out of fear he plans to leave once an FA, which is something that dates back to before he signed with us out of college. Compound that with an immediate replacement in Hall being available this off-season has made a perfect storm for rumours.

What a player is worth is heavily dependent upon the market. A player who you or I think is only worth around $5M could easily get more depending on the market. That said, we have no clue what this next FA market will look like because of covid.

Rule of thumb, if Eklund says its likely to happen, then its not even close to happening.

Hall may want to come here, but he just doesn't fit into our lineup well, nor will Treliving pay him what he appears to want ($10M+ per for 6-7 years), nor should he. That contract would be horrible on the backstretch and average at best on the front stretch.

Additionally, Calgary is very tight cap wise when considering all of the Dmen they will need to replace (Brodie, Hamonic, Gustaffson, Forbert, Stone). Of that group, I only realistically see Brodie being resigned (@ $4.5M-$5.0M per season) and possibly one of either Forbert or Stone for 6th/7th dman depth. Getting their Defence signed alone will eat up their available cap space. They would have to trade Gaudreau (who is a better, younger player) and it still wouldn't create enough cap space for an older, inferior Hall.

All things considered, it just doesn't make sense for Calgary to go this route, nor does it appear to be feasible even if they were considering doing it.
