Not that I disagree with Todd on any of his points, but I think for a team like NJ which has so little established NHL talent, you need to take a chance with Palmeri. We just handed $7M+ to Nico who frankly hasn't done poop compared to Kyle. This team needs someone established and successful to lead these kids forward because who else on these team really knows what they are doing?
That said, he's another guy you might have to move at the trade deadline. |

Hi Todd - If the Devils decide to keep Palms, what do you think he will fetch $ wise? |

Well Todd, this is a controversial view but one I hate to agree with. First order is to try and sign him for the relatively short deal, if that does not work he will be a sought after asset at the deadline. You did not bring up Gusev, who at a slightly younger age could see a more lucrative contract. If he doesn't want to sign, the trade deadline will indeed be a busy time-frame for the Devils. |

4 years 5.3 mill. seems right ... might have to go 5 years. But at 35 Plamieri is on the small side. |

I think Svingter88 is close at 7 years $42M BUT in light of the NHL shutdown and lingering effects of the pandemic on gathering we can only guess how things will play out for everyone.
I bet Taylor Hall would have done better signing with the Devils or Coyotes before this crazy poop went down. Not that an NHL shutdown was really predictable.... |

Indeed he would have.....will be interesting to see where he lands - for the money or for the best chance at a cup. I am thinking Colorado might be the place. |

I think you take the gamble. He's a positive in every way for this team, much like Coleman but obviously more productive. I'd be happy with 6mil/5yrs, if that's possible. |

I am a huge Palmieri fan so it pains me to say this, but depending on a miracle Devils Performance, Kyle may be worth more with some of these cap strapped teams looking to make a run next year. 7 years for a Kyle style player is a little long. Kyle is going to be 30 going on 31 for his next contract and that's not a good contract IMO. 5 at 6 mil a yr is even a little long.
Hall definitely is going to have to take less thanks to COVID 19, I think he has had a plan on where he'd like to go from last summer otherwise he would have at least entertained a long contract. Calgary? (Even though EK e4d it) still seems like he will do a going home gig to me. But does Calgary go for it? its going to be interesting.
Any way you look at it this is a buyers market coming up and the expansion draft makes it even more interesting.

18 more days till the lotto. Not that it's an option, but if it was.. I'm kind of leaning to picking our 6th-ish and 10th-ish overall picks rather than trading either in a package for JG. |

Josh Harris and David Blitzer are rumored serious about buying Mets and SNY network. Could divert $s away from Devs.... |

Yeah but might be able to watch Devils on a channel other than something in the 1000+ range. |

I get that, but they bought the 76ers on the cheap and their value in Fortune magazine has doubled since they bought them. With the Devils they also got the Arena, so they get money year round with concerts/shows/circus. According to the NY Post article, with the mets, they again will get a team at a severe discount AND the SNY network thrown in for cheap as well. Business wise it has worked well for them so far, its been the team performance that has been lacking.... |

Agreed. Less than 2 year rental (one of which will be next season, so who knows what that will look like and then the trade year) of JG is not worth two top ten picks. In year two he won't resign with us and we will not get two top ten picks back either for trading him for a half season. |

I know! Some of the Flames fans on Ek's blogs are throwing out (2) 1st's, Ty Smith and a roster player as a fari trage for JG. That is freaking absurd! We need depth at many positions not 1 star player.
Frankly, I'd keep the picks and try to sign Hall in free agency. He might come back as we could probably offer more in salary/term than most teams as the COVID effect on the cap may work to our favor. And it may likely be less $'S than what we originally offered him. |

With Gusev, Bratt and some of our LW prospects the Devils might be better off passing on Hall and deploy the cash for help elsewhere, god knows we need it. But I like Hall.
And those Calgary proposals are just stupid. |

he will be 31 first year of a new deal...... no way he gets 7 years ....

It's not what I want to pay him, its my guess as to what it would take to resign him and what he'd likely get as a free agent. I personally believe 6, 7 and 8 year contracts are completely insane.... But yes, you are likely overpaying him on the back end of the contract for the good years at the front of it.
BUT there is no law that you have to keep him til then end of that contact. Just look at the PK Subban deal. Nashville wanted to sign Duchene so they moved him. Got some small assets back, a ton of cap space and signed the player they wanted. You can move out players too.
We have the cap space so it's not like it's going to hurt us from making any other moves. A good GM will know how to keep talent and clear it out. That's part of the job.

I am with Todd on the 4 years max. With the cap taking a big hit, I think players will be forced to take slightly less than previously expected. 4 years 5.75M AAV is what I think the guy gets. Deserves more given what he has done, but if he wants any term, he better expect a big drop in salary. |
