For now not the end of the world but things change quickly. Week & ahalf ago the hubs were looking to be Vegas & Vancouver. 50000 new Covid cases yesterday in the US, the economic devastation has just started & who knows what things will be like in October & December, let alone end of July.

I can't see how the league can get these long term contracts under control but it's really not good for the anyone (except the overpaid player). It's bad for the sport as a whole and the individual teams.

That said, you can always try to move Milan with some assets to a team with cap space...

Yup & one thing we saw was Lucic is is a real team player, even considered retiring. Which I doubt he would ever do but I can see him easily waiving his no move if Treliving asked him, worst case, would be he plays a bigger role in Seattle if they chose him or if Tre slid them a 2nd &/or maybe a good prospect like Kyllington.
We got off dirt cheap in the last expansion draft, that probably wont be the case next year

Oh well, worst case would be we only lose 1 good player, life goes on.

Looch and BT are presumed to have a gentleman's agreement about honoring the NMC. While a buyout is still possible, there is no cap savings. $8.5m in signing bonuses over the next 3 years. Saying that, it's entirely possible that BT has Looch's agreement that he would waive the NMC come expansion draft.

I was never a big fan of the trade, but that's because I felt Neal had some more value than what the deal got. And like almost every conditional pick BT trades for, this one will never be realized. BT gets a hard bargain driven against him.

Lucic waiving or not waiving his NMC is meaningless. The Flames don't have 7 other forwards worth protecting. If they resign Brodie or Hamonic, the Flames will 100% be losing a defenceman to Seattle.

Best case scenario is they expose and lose Backlund. With the number of hard minutes he's put in, that's probably going to be a real ugly contract for the last 2-3 years.

I wouldn’t agree, if lucic doesn’t waive we would wind up exposing one of monahan, JG, tkachuck or lindholm. And even if he does waive I would rather protect backlund & mangiapane over hanifin. We may not have 7 forwards that deserve to be protected but we definitely have more than 4 and both our goalies aren’t good enough to warrant protecting both.

The way I see it the we will likely be protecting

Monahan
JG
Lindholm
Tkachuck
Backlund
Mangiapane
Dube*

Assuming hamonic walks

Giordano
Brodie
Anderson

* according to cap friendly’s expansion draft tool he is not exempt, I’ll also note that it appears valimaki and kylington aren’t exempt as well

I think going back to how we came out of the 2012 lockout that it’s quite comical how the owners put these limitations on contracts to try stop themselves from overpaying players. I think the current setup is fine, except for the elite players most contracts aren’t 7 or 8 years. If a team is going to overpay for a guy then that’s their own fault. I’m a supporter of league parity but I think I wouldn’t be best if all the top players were getting raises every 3 to 4 years. It would be awful hard for a contender to remain competitive when your players are alway re-upping for a premium

How does that make any sense? They get to protect 7 forwards, 3 defencemen, and a goalie.

Valimaki is exempt unless he plays in the playoffs, and that's not happening.

Unless both Dube and Mangiapane both have monster breakout years, Seattle is taking a defenceman, probably Brodie if he's still around.

I'm doubtful Mangiapane is even back next year with the salary cap staying flat.

I apologize, I was under the impression you were suggesting that Calgary go with the 8 skaters and 2 goalies protection list.

If was Seattle I would definitely consider mangiapane over the 2 D, unless he goes for a slump next year. He’s a top six winger who had 17 goals and 32 points in 68 games and has shown year to year improvement where as hanifin is what he is and Brodie will be on the wrong side of 30 with likely 3 to 4 years left on his deal. Dube I could see being exposed but with Derek Ryan being a pending FA, I don’t see anyone else I would put over him at 7.

Given his age I could see the argument for protecting hanifin over Brodie, but in my opinion Brodie is the better player.

Lastly going into this off-season with 16 million in cap space I don’t see why we couldn’t keep mangiapane. The only guys of significance that we should re-up are him, Brodie and talbot. I expect our players on 3rd pair D and our 4th line to be on cheap contracts around a million and if we need the space we could always move Bennett for peanuts to clear 2.5.

I honestly dont think we have the luxury of keeping Brodie or Hamonic. I would rather sign Gus & Forbert, I think both of them will come in cheaper than Brodie & no need to protect both of them either. Gio, Andersson & Hanifin are the D protected, Rittch maybe, & forwards would be Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Mangi, Backlund & my guess would be Bennett or Dube & chances are if Dube is protected, Treliving will have Bennett traded out east before the expansion draft for a very underwhelming return. I will place a side bet of $20.00 that Lucic will waive his NMC, but that wouldnt be fair as I have insider info

Gus and forbort would both be cheaper but they’re also both not as good, and unless the plan is to bring in a top 6 forward there’s no reason we shouldn’t spend to the cap. It would make sense to resign Brodie or hamonic and then lose one of them in expansion and just replace them with an FA next offseason. Also I believe we could probably resign forbort for around a million as well, so there’s no guarantee he would be gone

You’re right though about Bennett and dube being a coin flip. I chose dube on my list as I think he can develop into a top six forward where as Bennett is what he is. He will likely be gone at some point in the next year or so anyway as our prospect pool replenishes itself with new players
