Brodie yes. Hamonic no. His game is deteriorating faster than Phil Kessel's hairline. Krug will likely sign somewhere else other than Boston but I don't expect Yzerman to get involved in those sweepstakes. I can't see Krug wanting to play for this tire fire or incompetent head coach. Even though he's a Michigan boy (Livonia).

Yzerman will likely sign a UFA defenseman though. A player like Nemeth. Low cost. Short term. Stop gap guy to help Seider and Hronek along. We know the Scarecrow Danny Dekeyser can't stay healthy. Flames might not have the cap space to keep Brodie if they're big game hunting for Taylor Hall and/or Braden Holtby.

I'm a family friend of TJ Brodie. He grew up an hour away from Detroit. Nice guy. Quiet. Polite. He'd probably like to come home, but I know he also wants to win badly. So signing for 2-3 years only to be cut loose just as the Wings potentially turn the corner isn't his top choice. If he was offered a 5-6 year deal where he'd have a chance to win in the later years he might do it. But my bet is he takes less money to a contender. He's buddies with Kadri and might prefer the lifestyle in Colorado.

That’s very cool, thanks for that! COL could pay him and give him that chance for sure. It is a beautiful area too. If he has a shot to sign with a contender, you’re dead on. These guys get one career and the cup is a lifelong dream

I think you’re right on stop gap. With the Seattle draft coming it also makes sense to do something like that. Well done as always G

Signing Brodie for 2-3years at $4M or less would be good. No NTC if Stevie wishes to expose him to the Seattle CHOP Zoners.

I think Stevie should go for Jake Allen And either Tyler Bozak or Jaden Swartz, St Lous includes a 1st in that deal and retains $1M and Stevie gives up either Cholo or Sveth and a 6th

Nice take! I lean more toward Tyler Johnson for a forward. Allen might be a nice piece for the team as well

Actually TJ will age better as a Dman compared to Hamonic. He would be a good add for the Wings & with his wife's health, he may want to play closer to home. If Flames can re-up him at 4 or less, I can see them signing him. Problem is I think he is going to want at least a 4 or 5 year deal & the number will need to start with a 5 per year.

Hamonic will probably end up on a cap friendly deal in Winnipeg or a very cap friendly deal in Calgary as I see him as a bottom pairing guy & you can only pay a player with 10-14 min TOI so much. Most in Calgary have time for another term of Brodie but if we go Hall hunting & goalie hunting, something is gonna give. A lot will depend on they perform in these play in/playoff rounds. Kinda torn myself, would love a 1 in 8 chance for the first over all ticket. Lol

It must be a heartbreak to be worried about wife and kid like that. Seems like a great guy

Hey, J: Thoughts on the rumor that Demko or Markstrom are in our sights?
Svech & McIssac/Cholo + 2nd rounder for either?

I’d love Markstrom, but I’ve seen that VAN really wants to keep him. IF he’s available, that would be a solid move forward. Thanks for reaching out on that! Demko would be welcome as well. I mean, it would be hard not do to better than last year. Bernier stepped up and made a go, but Howie had a GAA of 4+. Tough sledding

I really don’t get the Markstrom hype.

He’s 30 years old and was aggressively, relentlessly average for pretty much the entirety of his first 10 years in the NHL. Then finally this year he had really good numbers — in a pandemic-shortened season in which he only faced 1,420 shots.

But not, like, super amazing numbers mind you. Out of the 62 goaltenders (chosen because there are 31 NHL teams, so two per team) who saw the most shots this year, Markstrom finished 13th in even strength save percentage. So, like, middle-of-the-pack-starting-goalie performance. Which I'm already skeptical about since he's never been anywhere near that good statistically in any of his 10 previous seasons.

Like, if he’s available as a UFA on a 2-year deal for about what he’s currently making? Sure, why not. But I wouldn’t want to get into a bidding war or commit a lot of assets or term for him. I think there’s a lot more evidence to suggest he’s a merely average NHL goalie (and one likely to decline soon given his age) than there is suggesting he’s an especially great one. I’m not at all convinced he’s better than Bernier to be honest.

I'm not trading McIsaac but wouldn't have a problem dealing Svechnikov and Cholowski in a trade for Demko.
