Theo Fox: Lukas Reichel: BPA at 17th
A review of the #Blackhawks 1st round selection of winger Lukas Reichel. Was he a surprise or a reach?
Surprise, yes. Reach, no. I think drafting Reichel as the best player available at 17th was justified. |

First. I’ll admit it surprised me too, but hope springs eternal.
Biggest question I have is: when will we see movement in the goalie market?
Do we have to wait till Lundqvist signs in DC on Friday?
Should the Hawks consider a move for Fluery? |

Lukas Reichel was a riser on my board all year long. Ended up at No. 17, but flirted with going even higher. One of my favorite players in the draft, a silky-skilled winger with a high-end release. As he gets stronger, he'll be even better. High upside pick here for Chicago. - LAHawk
Is that the ESPN guy LA? Believe it is and if so that was who he had the Hawks picking in their mock a week or so ago.

Interesting Tweet from Dietz today. None of the Hawks #1 picks from 2010-17 is still with the team. And those are the guys that should be major contributors now.
Jokiharju - Sabres
Schmaltz - Coyotes
hartman - Wild
Teravainen - Hurricanes
McNeill - out of league
Danault - Canadiens
Hayes - Flyers
I went a little farther and looked up who the Hawks got back when those guys moved on. Here's the list I came up with, not including guys that moved on with no return (like Weiss):
Nylander
Strome
Regula
Edsell
Beaudin
Kurashev
So, from the 2010-17 drafts, only 2 #1 drafted players are on the current Blackhawk roster, and neither is lighting up the league. Some of that has to be attributed to drafting toward the bottom of the 1st round. But not all of it. Some is poor drafting and bad trading. |

The Blackhawks European scouts are what give me the most hope for Reichel, but I have higher expectations for Pius Suter. I think Suter could have a significant impact next year. |

LA if hawks would want move up in thr 2nd round to 33 what would a trade look like? Have to think saad but who knows what hawks plans are for him or strome since he has yet to be qualified. Hawks need depth in every position imo. Bigger more physicality speed on the wings goaltending depth not sure lank and delia are the answers going forward. Centers with a 200ft game and good faceoffs. More grit and nastiness stay at home defender on back end to complement the smaller more puck moving offensive minded d men hawks have in their system.

Idk about the poor drafting part as only McNeil didn't make it to the NHL. Kevin Hayes chose to go to FA out of college so there's that. I wish he would have ended up here but he'd probably be gone given his current salary demands.
Danault was definitely a bad trade and TT was unfortunate, more so for Bickell getting MS because I'd rather still have him healthy and in a Hawk uni.

Reichel is the goods Late riser, elite hockey sense, great commitment to attacking the hard areas, and his game is the kind that'll benefit exponentially from the improved physical strength that he'll gain after his relatively recent growth spurt. Also, that German work ethic! |

Now do the other rounds. I'm not saying Bowman is the best gm but he gets poop on for drafting which he seems to be fine at. It's his trades that leave something to be desired. |

Get out of here. Bowman (frank)ed up, most here know better. There is no time to wait and see with prospects in the mid to late first rounds knowledgable hawks fans demand results immediately |

That’s way too much work. But I would enjoy Theo doing a deep dive into Stan’s draft success, compared with league average. |

Drafting and European scouting has been for the most part very good. Trading has been not very good and pro scouting also has not been very good. So bowman and company needs to build a balance lineup going into the upcoming season if they want a chance at the playoffs. |

I think someone actually did that before and he's around the league average of I'm remembering correctly. Or I might be way wrong. |

The Teravainen at the trade date was also not the Teravainen of today - remember "alligator arms"? - he needed a couple of years at Raleigh to grow into the useful productive skater we see now.
At the time (the summer before the 2016-17 season), the Hawks were still looking for Cup contention and really couldn't afford to wait for Teuvo to get it.
Besides unfortunately needing a sweetener to dump the Bickel contract. |
